Weekly

This weekly journal summarizes the student's progress on creating a factual documentary program about homelessness. In week 1, the student researched homelessness, choosing it as the topic. Research included statistics, stories, and facts. In week 2, the student watched documentaries to learn styles and plan production through location scouting, equipment lists, and interview questions. In week 3, helpful planning led to a successful interview, though the interviewee sometimes failed to repeat questions. The student feels the group worked well together with clear roles during production and editing outside of lessons to stay on track.

Weekly Journal

Regular evaluation updates are required with every unit. Please

remember to take photos and get behind the scenes footage
as you film. You might find it easier if you note down a record of what you did
each day in a diary form.

Week 1 This week you worked on your idea generation and

topic research
What have you been asked to We were asked to create 3 mind maps that match a
do? brief sent by BBC 3, and they had to be productions
that appealed to both genders as well as people 14-
24 year olds. We created our 3 on Homelessness,
Racism is sport as well as the Pros and cons of zoos
We were then asked to choose one of the three ideas
we had to thoroughly research, so we had a few
lessons to look at things like videos then put the useful
info on my site while using Harvard referencing to
credit the original author. We then proposed 3
productions that fit the brief on this topic
What are you making your 3 Overall we went with homelessness because it would
production on and why have you have been the easiest to overall film. If we were to do
chosen this topic? racism in football it would have been extremely hard
to find the right people to talk about their
experiences, and same with getting allowed into a
zoo to film. So we emailed some local Charites and
are awaiting their replies in case any are willing to
speak to us. Right now our plan
What research have you I researched around 3.5 hours on this topic throughout
completed this week and what this week, with screenshots, articles and videos all
have you learned? available on the website. I read many articles during
my secondary research, gathering stories and facts
that would benefit my production and my knowledge
on the topic. With this research, I feel I have a much
improved knowledge about homelessness throughout
the UK, and feel I can now quite confidently to ask
the expert questions when the time comes to
interview them without having to look back constantly
at the statistics. The main things I’ve learned through
research is that 320,000 people in the UK are
homeless, that 8/10 of rough sleepers that are helped
by councils never go back to rough sleeping, and
that some beggars in London make more money on
the streets from tourists than they would with an
actual job
Are you on track for this week? If This week I’ve completed all set tasks including the
not, how far behind are you? mind maps, research, proposals and examples of
Harvard referencing
What work do you need to n/a
complete outside of lessons to
stay on track?
Week 2 This week you worked on your factual programme

What research have you In week 2 I had watched 3 different style

completed this week and what documentaries on a variety of topics to help me
have you learned? understand more about the genre and starting to
think about the questions I could ask myself when the
time comes to interview my expert. I learnt about
angles and lighting for my own interview too. We also
did some more in-depth planning for our productions
including equipment list, location recces and crew list.
How have you divided your I did the location recces and Bilal did the equipment
planning amongst your group? list as well as the crew list
We both had a hand in writing our desired questions
together
What did you learn from your From planning the main thing I learned was asking
planning? How has it helped you questions to the interview as a deleted them and re
to progress your idea? worded them, many times until I felt they were at a
good enough standard for me to be able to get the
most out of my interviewee
Are you on track for this week? If I am on track as I’ve completed all of the pre-
not, how far behind are you? production work and am ready to film next week.
What work do you need to n/a
complete outside of lessons to
stay on track?
Week 3 This week you worked on your production

How helpful did you find your It was very helpful because the questions were right at
planning whilst out shooting your hand for us to use when the time came to ask them
factual programme? so the flow was better, and we get really useful
answers from our interviewee
What interviews did you set up Our set up was 2 cameras with a LED top light for
and how do you feel they have clearer lighting
added to your production?
What issues did you have when The only issues were that throughout the interview that
filming your production? How did there was a lot of our interviewee not repeating the
you overcome them? question in her answer, so we had to stop her a few
times and politely direct her on what to say, so that
the audience would make sense of the question
without actually hearing it first-hand.
How do you feel you are working We worked very well altogether, especially during the
as a group? What were your roles production when we both doing our own ‘jobs’ as
and responsibilities? crew members and it still came out really well in the
end. The jobs were all completed in pre-production
and we weren’t falling behind at all.
How much work did you I edited at my house as I had more freedom with time,
complete outside of the lessons? workspaces and I left all the pre-production and blogs
tasks for when we were in lessons.
