Lesson 2 Robotics

- Robots are machines that can perform tasks without human help. They have sensors to detect their environment, ways to move, an energy source, and intelligence through programming. - Many everyday objects are robots, like vacuums, home security systems, and some car features, though they may not look like the robots in movies. - A robot has sensors, control systems, manipulators, a power supply, and software working together to perform tasks. Studying robotics involves many disciplines like engineering, physics, and computing.

Lesson 2: What is a Robot?

Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

• Define what is a robot;

• understand the characteristics of a robot;
• expound on your robotics vocabulary; and
• understand what makes a robot unique to other machines.

A robot is a machine that does tasks without the help of a person. Many people think of robots as
machines that look and act like people. However, most robots, do not look like people. And robots do only
what a person has built them to do.

Robots in our daily lives

Many people think that robots can perform many amazing things
just like those that they movies. Well, the truth is most robots are
not like those you watch in the movies, but that doesn't mean that
these real-life robots are less amazing. Many everyday objects are
robots, even though you may have not noticed it since you were
anticipating something spectacular like those in the Transformer
movie. Robots are quickly becoming a part of our daily lives. There
are now robots that vacuum floors, guard against intruders in many
homes, and respond to voice commands in some car models. Some
car models have even automatic part assist, robots provide us with
directory assistance, it gives warning if what you are cooking is
already done. It helps you even in your voice mail.

What are the characteristics of a robot?

• Sensing A robot needs to know what is happening in its environment. To be able to do this, robots
have senses just like humans. However, robots have deferent ways of sensing things. It makes use
of sensors. Robots have light sensors (eyes), touch and pressure sensors (hands), and ultrasonic
sensors(ears). these sensors will give your robot awareness of its environment
• Movement Just like humans do, robots are capable of movements. Robots can walk, run, jump,
swim, or even fly. There are also robots that sits all day and only its arm is moving.
• Energy A robot is a machine and just like any other machine it needs power. The EV3 robot needs
batteries. Other robots get its power from solar energy, electrically powered and may come from
other sources of energy. The way your robot gets its energy will depend on what your robot needs
to do.
• Intelligence What makes a robot unique from any other machine is that it is "smart". It becomes
a smart machine because of programming. The one who does this is a human and he/she is called
a programmer. As you can see it's a partnership between humans and machines. Robots depends
on humans on what it is supposed to do.
So now what is a robot?
It seems that robots are complicated. Well, not really. Based on its characteristics, a robot is a system that
contains sensors, control systems, manipulators, power supplies and software all working together to
perform a task. Just think of it as your computer and in addition it has some awesome moving parts like
arms and legs. Designing, building, programming and testing a robot is a combination of physics,
mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, structural engineering, mathematics and computing. In
some cases, biology, medicine, chemistry might also be involved. A study of robotics means that students
are actively engaged with all of these disciplines in a deeply problem-posing problem-solving
environment.

here are some images of robots in our everyday lives

Robots are not just in the shape of humans,

it can be in any form or sizes and many of
these robots are being used in our every
day lives.
The features on this smart home exist today and not in some futuristic movies

A smart home, or smart house, is a home that incorporates advanced automation systems to provide the
inhabitants with sophisticated monitoring and control over home’s functions. For example, a smart home
may control lighting, temperature, multi-media, security, window and door operations, as well as many
other functions.
