Useful Facts About Angles: The Basics

Angles add up to 180° when they share a vertex and fill one side of a line. Angles add up to 360° when they share a vertex and fill the space around a point. When two lines cross, opposite angles and corresponding angles are equal, and the angles between two parallel lines add up to 180°. The angles in any triangle sum to 180° and the angles in any polygon with n sides add up to (n-2)×180°.

The Basics

When angles share a vertex and fill one side 𝛾

𝛽 𝛼 + 𝛽 + 𝛾 = 180°
of a line, they add to 180°. 𝛼

When angles share a vertex and fill the 𝛼 𝛽

space around a point, they add to 360°. 𝛾 𝛼 + 𝛽 + 𝛾 + 𝛿 = 360°

𝛽
When two lines cross, opposite angles are 𝛼 𝛼
equal. 𝛽

Parallel Lines

When a line crosses parallel lines, 𝛼

alternate angles are equal. 𝛼

When a line crosses parallel lines, 𝛽 𝛼
corresponding angles are equal. 𝛽 𝛼 𝛽

𝛼 + 𝛽 = 180°
𝛽
When a line crosses parallel lines, 𝛼
co-interior angles add to 180°.
𝛼 + 𝛽 = 180°

Shapes

Triangles

The angles in any triangle add to 180°. 𝛼 𝛼 + 𝛽 + 𝛾 = 180°

𝛽 𝛾

𝛼
In a right-angled triangle, the two smaller 𝛼 + 𝛽 = 90°
angles add to 90°. 𝛽

In a triangle, the largest angle is opposite 𝛼 𝑏

𝑐 𝑎≥𝑏≥𝑐⇒𝛼≥𝛽≥𝛾
the longest side, and the smallest angle is 𝛾
𝛽
opposite the shortest side. 𝑎

In an isosceles triangle (two sides equal), 𝛼

the angles opposite the equal sides are
equal. 𝛼

60°
In an equilateral triangle (all sides equal),
the angles are all 60°. 60°

Circles

𝛼
In a circle, all the angles subtended at the
edge by the same chord are equal. 𝛼

𝛼
In a circle, the angle subtended at the
centre by a chord is twice the angle 2𝛼
subtended at the edge.

The angle subtended in a semicircle is a

right angle.

At a point on the edge of a circle, the angle

between the radius and the tangent is a
right angle.
