2014 Printed Program
we've had Christmas in Christ Chapel." Our Advent and Christmas tradition is an opportunity to both
worship and celebrate with our own families and friends and the larger Gustavus family, who have all
come "home" to the College to relive the wonder of Christ's birth.
We who gather here to join our voices with the whole heavenly host and to rekindle the heart of
believing share a conviction that religious faith enriches learning. It is the found.ation of the other values
Gustavus holds up: excellence, community, justice, and service. Without expecting conformity, we
encourage an honest exploration of religious faith in general and seek to foster a mature understanding
of the Christian faith in particular.
Over the years, our Christmas in Christ Chapel themes have introduced the community to many
different inte¡pretations of t}re Nativity and different forms of Chrisrian expression in worship. We hear
the familiar hymns and carols as well as tÏe new ones, and are reminded each year of the traÁtion that
gives us this beautiful music.
This year's theme, "Tender Rose, Starry Night," encourages us to ponder a God who participates fully
in the emergence of life in all of its cosmic splendor and in the vulnerable moments ofhuman birth.
Within the context of this massive universe, Christians boldly claim that God is present with us on
Earth. The Nativity of Jesus narrates this timeless story for us each year, so that we do not forget God's
steadfast love for us and for all creation.
And so I welcome you to this college on the hill and the prairie carhedral that is Christ Chapel. The
voices and instruments of 350 student musicians lead us as we celebra te the 42nd, annual Christmas
in
Christ Chapel.

The Nativity of lesus has always been a cosmic story, not just a human one.
The theme for this year's services was inspired by another signature event of the College, the Nobel
Conference. This October, Gustavus hosted its 50th Nobel Conference, centered around the question,
"Where does science go from herel" Because of its longstanding commitment to the interconnectedness
of faith and learning, the Nobel Conference has often also included a theologian, ethicist, or philosopher
who explores the implications of scientific research for people asking questions of faith and meaning.
This year during Christmas in Christ Chapel, we will ponder the cosmic significance oflesus's humble
birth in light of scientific discoveries about tåe vastness and magnificence of the universe. God's
relationship with the created world has been affirmed throughout the sacred writings ofludaism and
Cluistianity. Thc earliest biblical writcrs speculated about God's role in the creation of life on earth. In
each era of scientific advance, people of faith have wondered anew about God's activity in the material
uruvcrse.
Since the first century of the Common Era, Christians have made cosmic claims about lesus: that in him
the Word of God, present with God in the creation of the universe, became incarnate in a material body.
And, that through his life, death, and resurrection, God is at work redeeming the whole creation.
Today we understand that lesus's flesh, like all human bodies, was made up of stardust, that human beings
share 99 percent of the same DNA as chimpanzees, that human life is deeply dependent upon the well-
being of the earth, and that our universe is much grander and expansive than previous generations could
have imagined. These scientific discoveries encourage us to expand our vision of God and to reflect on the
significance of Jesus's birth from a much larger vantage point.
In this meaning-making we have able guides. As you encounter the work of some of Christianity's most
creative theologians, mystics, poets, dancers, and musicians) \rye invite you to prepare your hearts and
minds to celebrate another Christmas, inspired anew by this amazing, unfolding cosmic story of birth and
life.
Blessings,
Chaplain Siri C. Erickson
