Ancient Rome

Ancient Rome was founded by the brothers Romulus and Remus in 735 BC. Rome expanded through trade and became the strongest empire in the world by conquering large territories between 390 BC to 146 BC. Rome was successful for a long time due to its strong military, infrastructure like aqueducts and roads, and a period of peace and stability known as Pax Romana. However, the empire began to decline due to civil wars, invasions by barbarian tribes, weak emperors, and unhealthy living conditions which led to its eventual fall in 476 AD.

Ancient Rome

Why I chose this civilization

I chose this civilization because I was interested in why Rome fell. Ancient Rome was very important
because they spoke Latin and a lot of languages came from Latin. Rome also controlled a lot of Europe
and European culture was based on Roman culture. They also built aqueducts that are still being used
today. This is why Rome was so important.

The Rise of the Roman Empire

Legend says that two brothers named Romulus and
Remus founded Rome. Romulus killed Remus and then
named the city after himself around 735 BC. When
Rome started out as a small town, they were lucky to be
near a good water source so they could have good
drinking water. Rome expanded through trading with
their neighbors, the Etruscans and Greek tribes. Rome
got wood and building material to start building up
Rome. Eventually Rome became the strongest empire
in the world by conquering lots of territory. Between 390 BC – 146 BC, the Roman Empire spread out
from Italy and went all the way from Britain to the Middle East to Carthage in Northern Africa.

Rome was a successful empire for a long time. It was successful even though it was really big which
made it hard because the bigger the territory, the harder it is to govern. They were successful at
governing by building aqueducts for fresh water, building roads and sewers and the Colosseum for
entertainment. Their military was so strong it was almost unbeatable which is the reason they
conquered all the territory. The “Pax Romana” (Roman Peace) was a 200-year long period of peace. It is
the first example of globalization because Rome was an empire and all the different territories had the
same currency, languages and government.

The Fall of the Roman Empire

The Pax Romana started to fall apart because of civil wars. There were two emperors
fighting over control of the Roman Empire. In 395 AD, the Roman Empire was split into
the Eastern and Western Empires. This was the beginning of the end. Between 406-419
AD Rome lost a great deal of territory to multiple German tribes. The Western Empire’s
collapse was from military losses against barbarians. Rome didn’t really fall until 476 AD when Odoacer
overthrew the Emperor Romulus Augustus and became the first barbarian to rule Rome, turning the
citizens into slaves. The Eastern Empire survived until the 15th century.

The main reasons for the fall of the Roman Empire were: foreign invasion and military loss; the Pax
Romana starting to crumble; bad emperors who didn’t do a good job of governing; living spaces that
were expensive, unhealthy and dangerous; and the richer Romans dying from lead poisoning because
they used lead pipes to bring water into their houses.
