Computer Systems Servicing Demo

This semi-detailed lesson plan outlines how to configure a wireless router as an access point in 3 steps: 1) Connect the wireless router to a computer via Ethernet and access its settings through the IP address. Change the router's IP address and wireless settings. 2) Disable the wireless router's DHCP server so it does not assign IP addresses. 3) Connect the main router to the wireless router via Ethernet. Wireless devices can now access the internet through the wireless router's wireless network. The lesson plan provides detailed instructions on configuring a TP-Link router as an access point, including changing settings like the SSID, password, and disabling the DHCP server. Presentation of the Lesson

How do we configure router as an access point.

Different wireless routers from different brands follow standards on how to implement
network connection wirelessly. However, some brands implement these through
layouts and configuration that are unique from each brand. If you understand the
basics, the concepts and its functions of the most common router settings, you can
easily find your way around the different types of menus and settings.

ENGLISH 10 – JOHN RAY F. ARQUISOLA 1

The steps outlined here are those found on a TP-Link Router. You can check your
manufacturer’s webpage or Setup guide that comes along with the wireless router upon
purchase and follow its steps.

How to Configure TP-Link N router as a wireless Access Point?

Main Router Access Point

Step 1

Connect your computer to a second LAN port on your TP-Link N router using an
Ethernet cable.* Login to the TP-Link web interface through the IP address listed on
the label on the bottom of your TP-Link N router.

Note: Though possible, it is not recommended to attempt this process over Wi-Fi

Step 2

Go to Network>LAN on the side menu and change the LAN IP address of your TP-Link
N router to an IP address on the same segment of the main router. This IP address
should be outside the main router’s DHCP range.

Example: if the DHCP of your main router is 192.168.2.100 – 192.168.2.199 then

you can set the IP of the TP-Link N router to 192.168.2.X (X should be outside your
main router's DHCP range), like 192.168.2.11.

Note: After changing the LAN IP address a reboot will be required and you will need
to log into the TP-Link N router with the new IP address.

Step 3

Go to Wireless>Wireless Settings and configure the SSID (Network name)which can

be the same or different from the main router’s. Select Save.

ENGLISH 10 – JOHN RAY F. ARQUISOLA 2

Step 4

Go to Wireless>Wireless Security and configure the wireless security. WPA/WPA2-

Personal is recommended as the most secure option. Once configured, click Save.

Note: If using a dual band router, repeat this process for the 5GHz band as well.

Step 5

Go to DHCP>DHCP Settings and select Disable the DHCP Server. Select Save.

Step 6

Go to System Tools>Reboot and select Reboot to reboot the device.

ENGLISH 10 – JOHN RAY F. ARQUISOLA 3

Step 7

Use an Ethernet cable to connect the main router to your TP-Link N router through
their LAN ports (any LAN ports may be used). All other LAN ports on your TP-Link N
router will now grant devices Internet access. Alternatively, any Wi-Fi device can now
access the Internet through your TP-Link N router by using the SSID and Password
set up in the above steps.

Self Check:

Direction: Fill in the blanks with the correct answer.

1. ________________________ is recommended as the most secure option.

2. Login to the TP-Link web interface through the _________ listed on the label on
the bottom of your TP-Link N router
3. Different wireless routers from different brands follow __________ on how to
implement network connection wirelessly.

JOB SHEET 2.3-4

Title:

Router Configuration (as wireless AP and Repeater)

ENGLISH 10 – JOHN RAY F. ARQUISOLA 4

Performance Objective:

Given a wireless router and a personal computer (laptop) you should be able to
configure the router as an access point (AP) for the laptop to connect wirelessly
in 2.5 hours.

Supplies/Materials:

1. Personal Computer (laptop / netbook)

2. Wireless Router
3. Pins or Ballpoint pen
4. Ethernet Cable

Steps/Procedures:

1. Prepare your workplace

a. Make sure that you have the necessary materials.
b. Make sure that the workplace is clean and dry.
2. Start
a. Turn on the wireless router (most wireless router do not have an on/off
switch. Plugging the routers power supply automatically turns on the
router.)
b. Reset the wireless router
c. Connect the wireless router to computer via ethernet
d. Access the wireless router’s settings via its web interface.
e. Change the wireless router’s IP address
f. Restart the wireless router and access it again via its new IP Address
g. Change the wireless router’s SSD
h. Set the wireless router’s password
i. Disable DHCP (Disable only when another router (usually the modem
router from the ISP) provides the IP address)
j. Connect laptop to the wireless router wirelessly
