The Pursuit of Happyness CHARACTER evaluation worksheet

Below list the moments in the movie in which Chris demonstrates or uses the
following concepts of the 7 habits:

Principles and Paradigms:

Chris limited himself when he thought that perhaps some aren’t destined to
ever be happy, and maybe the best they can do is to pursue happiness.

Habit 1 Being Proactive:

He was being proactive by pursuing the internship even though it didn't pay and
he was risking a lot considering his money availability.

Putting First Things First:

Even though he needed to make the calls in order to pass the internship, he left
three hours early in order to get his son.

Empathy: Empathy means being able to identify with and understand another
person’s feelings, situation, and motives.
● One example of empathy is when his landlord offered to let him paint in order to
Stay another week.
● When the doctor told chris to come back when the machine was working.
● The women at the womens and children shelter helped find another place to stay.

Honesty: Truthfulness and integrity are important in any healthcare field. Others
must be able to trust you at all times. You must be willing to admit mistakes so they
can be corrected.
● At the internship interview he was telling them the truth about why he was
dressed the way he was.
● He gave his boss the five dollars instead of lying and telling him that he didn't
have money to give.
● He told his son that he got hit by a car and that's why he didn't have a shoe.

Dependability: Employers and patients rely on you, so you must accept the
responsibility required in your position. You must be prompt in reporting to work.
● When his boss asked him to move his car even when he had an important
meeting.
● He didn't have a lot of time and still helped the boss at all opportunities.
● He was always there for his son regardless of where he was.

Willingness to learn: You must be willing to learn and to adapt to changes.

● The whole idea of becoming a stockbroker was learning and adapting
● He had to learn how to fix the bone scanner
● He also adjusted to the lighting in the shelter in order to study, shower his son, as
well as fixing a machine

Patience: You must be tolerant and understanding. You must learn to control your
temper and “count to ten” in difficult situations. Learning to deal with frustration
and overcome obstacles is important.
● When he got kicked out of the hotel he played “a game” with his son to make sure
that his son didn’t have to take the blame or frustration of being homeless.
● When Chris took the unpaid-internship and deal with the financial problems
another way.
● When he found out that the bone scanner was broken, he took his time to learn
how to fix it.

Acceptance of criticism: Patients, families, employers, coworkers, doctors, and

others may criticize you.
● Even when Chris’ bone scanner was rejected by doctors, he thanked them for
their time and moved on.
● When the other people in the internship were criticizing how Chris only had one
shoe, he stayed calm and ignore their comments.
● When he was at the game he accepted rejection from the authority and moved on
he didn’t let it change his motivation.

Enthusiasm: You must enjoy your work and display a positive attitude. Enthusiasm
is contagious; it helps you do your best and encourages others to do the same.
● When times were bad he put his best foot forward in order to have good things in
the future.
● Chris was always able to put on a smile and put the negative things behind them
When he was with his boss.
● He was always positive around his son and didn't let how his day went affect how
he was around his son.

Self-motivation: Self-motivation, or self-initiative, is the ability to begin or to

follow through with a task. You should be able to determine things that need to be
done and do them without constant direction. You set goals for yourself and work
to reach the goals.
● he saw a person with what he wanted and he seeked out a position to get to
where he wanted to go, even if he had to work at the same time
● He wanted to sell all the bone scanners, no matter how many doctors he had to
visit he was still able to accomplish it
● he saw someone with what he wanted, he saw that it was going to be difficult but
he still tried and didn’t let his background or position limit his goals

Tact: Being tactful means having the ability to say or do the kindest or most fitting
thing in a difficult situation.
● He gave his boss $5 when he didn’t have enough money for himself
● When he moved his boss’ car for him even though he already had a busy schedule
● he went to an interview and told them the real reason he was dressed the way he
was as a way to personify him and show good character
Competence: Being competent means that you are qualified and capable of
performing a task.
● Chris was able to work hard and study for his internship test, in which he
performed very well
● In the interview for the internship, Chris did everything he could to show he
could handle the job despite his low education
● he knew that he had to potential to be a good stock broker and as shown later in
the film he sold a multi million dollar account
Responsibility: Responsibility implies being willing to be held accountable for
your actions.
● Even though he had an interview he served his time in jail because he knew it
was the only way to pay for his debt
● When his boss got a ticket because of Chris, he paid for the ticket himself
● He was honest to his wife about not selling any bone scanners

Discretion: You must always use good judgment in what you say and do
● he lost a shoe but he knew he didn't have the time to look for it or go to the
doctor he knew he had to make those calls and work hard despite the prior
occurrence
● For his interview he had to go dressed in his dirty clothes
● He had tried to hide the fact that he didn’t have a car and made up an excuse to
why he was taking the bone scanner to the game

Team player: In any healthcare field, you will become part of a team. It is essential
that you become a team player and learn to work well with others
● Chris was able to get along with all the higher authority of the internship
● he ran errands for his boss in order to keep his employer happy even though he
was sacrificing a large part of his work time
● Chris stayed civil with the people in the internship he was competing for a job
with
