COMPARATIVE AND SUPERLATIVE

ADJECTIVES

Examples:
- My car is darker than this blue
car.
- Araxá is colder than Uberaba.
- English is easier than Portuguese.
- We have some bigger shoes here.
- This belt is more expensive than
that one.
- São Paulo is more polluted than
Araxá.
- With adjectives of one syllable we
add ER THAN (short adjectives).
BIG + ER = BIGGER THAN
COLD + ER = COLDER THAN
HOT + ER = HOTTER THAN
DARK + ER = DARKER THAN
LARGE + ER = LARGER THAN

And some adjectives of two


syllables:
EASY FRIENDLY NAUGHTY
PRETTY HEAVY ANGRY BUSY
DUSTY DIRTY
Irregular Forms:
GOOD – BETTER (than) - THE BEST
COMPARATIVE SUPERLATIVE

BAD – WORSE (than) – THE WORST


COMPARATIVE SUPERLATIVE

Examples:
1. Toddy is better than Nescau.
2. Bia prefers mizuno than nike. In
her opinion mizuno is better than
nike.
3. Vasco is the best soccer team in
Rio.
4. ‘Almeirão’ is worse than ‘jiló’.
5. Flamengo is the worst soccer
team in Rio.
6. Araxá is hotter than Curitiba.
7. Santos is the worst soccer team in
São Paulo.
8. Tapira is colder than Araxá.
9. Tapira is bigger than Antinha.
10. Bambuí is smaller than Araxá.
11. Araxá is smaller than Uberaba.
12. Itaipu is smaller than Antinha.
13. Franca is bigger than Araxá.
14. Rio is hotter than Araxá.
15. Portuguese is easier than math.
16. Araxá is bigger than Tapira.
17. Uberaba is bigger than Araxá.
18. The book is better than a
computer.
19. English is easier than Spanish.
20. Portuguese is better than math.
21. My English teacher is friendlier
than my math teacher.
22. The angry birds are angrier than
bugs bunny.
23. My mother is heavier than my

- With adjectives of two or more
syllables we use:

MORE OR LESS + ADJECTIVE + THAN

BEAUTIFUL + MORE BEAUTIFUL THAN


INTERESTING + MORE INTERESTING THAN

EXCITING + MORE EXCITING THAN


EXPENSIVE + LESS EXPENSIVE THAN
TALKATIVE + LESS TALKATIVE THAN
CROWDED + MORE CROWDED THAN

Examples:
1. Eric is more intelligent than
Bruna.
2. Brad Pitt is more handsome
than Tom Cruise.
3. Flamengo is more famous than
Vasco da Gama.
4. Araxá is more beautiful than
Ibiá.
5. Gisele is more beautiful than
Xuxa.
6. Frank is more handsome than
Gianecchini.
7. People is more interesting than
CCAA.
8. Mel is more beautiful than
Natália.
9. English is more important than
Spanish.
10. Atlético Mineiro is more
important than Cruzeiro.
11. Camilla is more intelligent
than Josefina.
12. Bianca is more beautiful than
Camilla.
13. Flamengo is better than
Cruzeiro.
14. London is more beautiful than
Manchester
EXPRESSIONS WITH AS…AS
EQUALITY
Examples:
1. Rio de Janeiro is as beautiful as
New York.
2. São Paulo is as polluted as
Mexico City.
3. Madonna isn’t as beautiful as
Beyoncé.
4. Araxá is as clean as Pratinha.
5. Franklin is as a good teacher as
Eric.
6. ‘Atlético Mineiro’ is as good as
‘Cruzeiro’.
7. I’m not as rich as Pelé.
8. I’m not as good as Onilda.
9. Barcelona isn’t as good as
Cruzeiro.
10. ‘Caldeirão do Hulk’ is as good as
‘Faustão’.
11. She spends as little time as
possible on her make-up.
12. I tried as hard as I could to find
the right style for her.
THE SUPERLATIVE
- With adjectives one syllable we add EST.
Examples:
1. Piaui is the hottest state in Brazil.
2. São Joaquim (RS) is the coldest city in
Brazil.
3. I’m the tallest student in class.
4. Tiago is the fattest guy in class.
5. Araxá is the best city in Brazil.
6. Usain Bolt is the fastest man in the
world.
7. Paula is the best English student at
9° C grade.
- With adjectives of two or more syllables
we add THE MOST/THE LEAST + ADJECTIVE.

Examples:
1. Rio is the most beautiful city in Brazil.
2. Gisele Bunchen was the most famous
top model in the world.
3. Tâmara/Clara/Ana/Paula are the
most beautiful girls in class.
4. Paula is the naughtiest girl in Araxá.
5. Flamengo is the most famous soccer
team in the world.
6. Brazil is the most populated country
in South America.
7. América is the least qualified team in
the championship.
