FAVORITE WORDS
Do you have a favorite place, a favorite time of day, or favorite
pastime? When you use the Internet, do you bookmark your favorite
sites? Do you have any favorite words?
In fact, there are many favorite words in use that are not in any
dictionaries. An example is ‘spinter.’ This is the time between winter and
spring, when the weather changes quickly. It is made from the first two
letters of ‘spring’ and the last five letters of ‘winter.’ You can probably
guess what ‘sprummer’ means. In the same way, ‘snirt’ refers to snow
that has become dirty. How about ‘furgle’? This is a different type of
word. It comes from the sound you make when you feel in your pockets
for money or keys. Another type of favorite word is ‘fumb.’ This sounds
like ‘thumb’ and refers to the ‘thumb on our foot (the big toe).
Nobody is sure where these new words come from. They become
popular because they are interesting and easy to use. After some time,
they are included in dictionaries and become part of the language. Other
new words are invented by individuals. For example, the word ‘googol’
was invented in 1938 by a 9-year-old boy. If refers to huge number (1
followed by 100 zeros and was changed to ‘Google’ when it became the
name of a search engine.
Language is always changing. New words are made and old,
