CHAPTER V

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

This chapter presents the summary of the research, conclusions based on

outcomes and recommendations as reference for future researchers who wants to

improve their study.

5.1 Summary

The study aimed to design and simulate a control system of anaerobic digestion

system for biogas production. After the study has been completed and met the

objectives as well as the requirements of the study, the study came up the following

results.

1. In this study, the design requirements were obtained as the important elements

and functions that are necessary for creating the control system for anaerobic

digestion system. The design requirements that determined are the: types, size,

dimension, materials and input parameters that were gathered from DOST

Batangas. This served as the most important consideration upon designing the

control system. The process of operation of the anaerobic digestion system was

gathered from Marasigan's Farm located in Soro-Soro Ibaba, Batangas City

and Suarez Farm located in Brgy.Talumpok, Batangas City.

2. In order to come up with the transfer function of the control system, certain data

were gathered and were used to data driven control process using Aspen plus.

The collected data from data driven control were used to determine the

mathematical model of anaerobic digestion system. Matlab software was used

to create the algorithm of the controller and the mathematical model for the

anaerobic digestion system. Matlab algorithm formulated three transfer

function. The transfer functions were used to generate a graphical

representation of the system that tells the current condition of the anaerobic

digestion system using different response plot and stability criterion plot.

3. The study determined the components of the control system. In designing the

control system, the proponents used Simulink toolbox. The controller was

simulated in Simulink. The three transfer function generated were used as three

transfer function plant in control system. The proponents used auto tune feature

of Ziegler Nichols method in order to determine the gains for the designing of

PID controller. The designed PID controller can be used to regulate process

variables of the study. The aimed control system is a closed loop system with

negative feedback.

4. The stability of control system was evaluated by analyzing its step response,

impulse response, bode diagram, nyquist diagram and Nichols chart. The rules

of each stability criterion was used to determine if the system is stable or

unstable.

5. The technical documents of the study were composed of BoM, P&ID, PFD,

Junction Box Layout, Instrument Index, Instrument List, Instrument Datasheet

and Plant 3D.

6. The simulation of chemical model of anaerobic digestion system for data driven

has occurred using Aspen Plus, the formulation of mathematical model of

anaerobic digestion system were tested and evaluated using MatLab and the

simulation of designed control system were verified and assessed using

Simulink. The procedures and simulation results were presented in Chapter 3

and Chapter 4 respectively while the data of Aspen and Matlab codes were

presented in the Appendices of this study.

5.2 Conclusion
1. Upon identifying the design requirements for the control system of anaerobic

digestion system via DOST Batangas, Marasigan’s Farm and Suarez Farm, the

proponents acquired that the design parameters that affect the system being

studied were firstly the feedstock ratio that were input to the system, the pH of

what is inside the tank, and the operating temperature. There were also some

important matter being considered such as the shape of the digester, the

digester structure, the orientation of the digester, the exposure of the digester,

and the safety of the system. In addition, there were 9 collected data for 28

days on Aspen. The technical parameter that was identified was frequency

response in which is essential to study and analyze the system. Bode criterion

plots the magnitude separately from the phase response and simplifies the

portrayal of the frequency response.

2. Considering the data collected from the Anaerobic Digestion System, the

proponents come up with mathematical model. In formulating the mathematical

model through anaerobic digester design, the type of mathematical model being

plot was transfer function. Three transfer function were obtained and used to

generate a graphical representation of the system that tells the current condition

of the anaerobic digestion system.

3. For the design of control system of anaerobic digestion system, the proponents

come up on a closed loop negative feedback design.

4. .

5. It is important to visualize the output of a system under development or use.

The presence of documentation helps keep track some aspects to provide

sufficient information to understand internal and external product dependency

including the model performance, output of the design and specifications. This
study included guides and schematics for documents such as Bill of Materials,

Piping and Instrumentation Diagram, Process Flow Diagram, Junction Box

Layout, Instrument Index, Instrument List, Instrument Datasheet and Plant 3D.

Being familiar with these documents helps the future user on proper handling

and usage, for this document provides solution for queries and future issues at

quicker time.
