ENGINEERING OF TEXTILE STRUCTURES
Time: 3 Hours Max. Marks: 100
Note: Be precise in your answer. In case of numerical problem assume data wherever not provided.
SECTION – A
1. Attempt all parts of the following questions: 10 x 2 = 20
(a) What do you mean by idealized yarn geometry?
(b) What is yarn number and twist factor?
(c) What do you mean by twist contraction?
(d) What is limit of twist?
(e) What do you mean by fibre migration in a yarn structure?
(f) Define ideal packing in the yarn.
(g) Define packing factor. Give its numerical formula for an idealized yarn.
(h) Define fabric cover.
(i) What is Fabric firmness?
(j) What are the elements of fabric geometry?
SECTION - B
2. Attempt any five of the following questions: 5 x 10 = 50
(a) Explain the term twist contraction. Establish a relation between twist multiplier and
twist factor.
(b) Draw a schematic diagram of idealized helical model for yarns. With suitable
assumptions discuss the ideal packing of circular fibres in the yarn.
(c) Derive the relationship between the yarn and filament modulus for large strain.
(d) Briefly discuss about the spinability and torsional behavior of the fibre.
(e) Discuss the effect of twist on the strength of staple fibre yarn.
(f) Describe mechanism of fibre migration in any yarn. Also discuss the cause of
migration in binary blended yarn.
(g) Draw a neat sketch of unit cell of a plain weave cloth and define eleven parameters of
cloth geometry.
(h) From suitable assumptions derive expression to obtain inter yarn lateral force acting at
the cross over in the plain weave fabric.
SECTION – C
Attempt any two of the following questions: 2 x 15 = 30
3. Calculate maximum sett for a plain weave square fabric produced from 20 tex yarn using
any one theory of cloth setting.
4. Suggest various means to define cover of cloth. From suitable assumptions derive cloth
factor
1
Kc = 16 √𝑤(𝑛1 + 𝑛2)
5. Explain Hambureger model and its different modifications for staple fibre yarn.
