The Krakatoa: Volcano Research: Science 9

The document summarizes information about the Krakatoa volcano located between Java and Sumatra in Indonesia. It describes how in 1883 Krakatoa erupted catastrophically, killing over 36,000 people and being heard over 4,000 km away. The eruption generated massive tsunamis over 40 meters high and lowered global temperatures for years due to volcanic debris blocking sunlight. Krakatoa remains active today as a small island that occasionally erupts at low levels.

VOLCANO RESEARCH : SCIENCE 9

THE KRAKATOA

1. Where is the volcano located?

-It is located at Rakata Island in the Sunda Straight between Java

and Sumatra, Indonesia

2. When did the famous erruption occured?

-It is on August 27, 1883, when Krakatoa erupted spectacularly,

expelling huge clouds of gas and ash, generating massive
tsunamis, and killing more than 36,000 people.

3. What type of volcano is it?

-Mount Krakatoa is an example of a stratovolcano, a tall, conical

volcano with multiple strata of solidified lava, tephra, as well as
volcanic ash. These type of volcanoes typically have steep sides and

usually erupt frequently & violently. Most of the popular eruptions

have been made by stratovolcanoes.

4. What is unique or interesting about the volcano?

- Did you know that the actual Indonesian name for the volcano
is "Krakatau". "Krakatau" is derived from the noise made by
the white parrots living on the island. Another theory says it
comes from the Sanskrit word "karkata" meaning "lobster" or
"crab".

- The eruption which took place in 1883 generated the loudest

sound ever reported in history.
- The sun was blocked out for several days because of the
volcanic fallout in the atmosphere.
- The explosions were heard on Rodriguez Island, 4653 km
distant across the Indian Ocean, and over 1/13th of the earth’s
surface.
- Ash fell on Singapore 840 km to the north, Cocos (Keeling)
Island 1155 km to the SW, and ships as far as 6076 km
west-northwest. Darkness covered the Sunda Straits from 11
a.m. on the 27th until dawn the next day.
- Giant waves reached heights of 40 m above sea level,
devastating everything in their path and hurling ashore coral
blocks weighing as much as 600 tons.
- At least 36,417 people were killed, most by the giant sea
waves, and 165 coastal villages were destroyed.
- When the eruption ended only 1/3 of Krakatau, formerly 5×9
km, remained above sea level, and new islands of steaming
pumice and ash lay to the north where the sea had been 36 m
deep.
- Three months after the eruption these products had spread to
higher latitudes causing such vivid red sunset afterglow that
fire engines were called out in New York, Poughkeepsie, and
New Haven to quench the apparent conflagration. Unusual
sunsets continued for 3 years.

- Rafts of floating pumice-locally thick enough to support men,

trees, and no doubt other biological passengers-crossed the
Indian Ocean in 10 months. Others reached Melanesia, and
were still afloat two years after the eruption.
- The volcanic dust veil that created such spectacular
atmospheric effects also acted as a solar radiation filter,
lowering global temperatures as much as 1.2 degree C in the
year after the eruption. Temperatures did not return to
normal until 1888.
5. Is the volcano active, dormant or extinct?
- Krakatau is still active. The presently-active vent has formed a
small island in the middle of the ocean-filled caldera that
developed during the famous big eruption of 1883. The island
is called Anak Krakatau, which means child-of-Krakatau. It is
pretty much erupting all the time at a low level, but once or
twice a year it has slightly larger eruptions that people notice
and sometimes report in the news. Of course none of these
are anywhere near the size of the famous 1883 eruption.

THE KRAKATOA
NO BOMB CAN STAND THE KRAKATOA`S BLAST

THAT KILLED A LOT OF PEOPLE IN TIME SO FAST

A HORROR OF HISTORY OH! DEAR WHAT AN INCIDENT,

KRAKATOA`S PAST I WISHED IT NEVER HAPPENED.

BIG WAVES OCCURRED WHEN A PIECE OF IT COLLAPSED

IT STARTED TO LINGER ON THE ISLANDS AND TRAPPED

A THOUSAND OF HOUSES IN A ONE SINGLE SNAP

OH DEAR! AN ERUPTION COULD BE DEADLY AT ANY GAP.

COUNTLESS PEOPLE WE`RE STILL DEVASTATED

BY THAT SITUATION KRAKATOA HAS ENDED

NOT ONLY SO LIVES BUT ALSO COBBLED

THE LIVELIHOOD OF MANY IS NOW IN DEAD

IT IS NOW IN HARMONY BUT DO NOT BE COMPLACENT

IT CAN ERUPT AGAIN AT ANY OF THIS MOMENT

JUST A TIP TO REMEMBER ALWAYS BE READY

AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE BE A MIND WORTHY.

The Volcano

The land, the earth is now rumbling

A volcano near me must be erupting

Smokes and ashes we`re up in the sky

Still I can hear rumbling sounds was high!

I run into our house looking at our window

And there I saw lava , made me quiver

I watched how fast it runs to and flow

Boom! A loud sound was made it made me shiver

It amazed me somehow the lava turned to stone!

Oh! what a great scene an exciting phenomenon!

But I think I made a mistake for saying it is great

I looked at the town, it`s color now was grey

A volcano is really a dangerous one

The rumbling sounds we`re now gone

It might be in silence, but no one can say

How hard it can be fatal it erupts on its way.
