SHIPS’ ROUTEING
SHIPS’ ROUTEING
Ships’ routeing systems contribute to safety of life at
sea, safety and efficiency of navigation and
protection of the marine environment.

They are recommended for use by all ships. A ship


shall use a mandatory ships’ routeing system unless
there are compelling reasons not to use a system.
Any such reason shall be recorded on the ship’s
log.
SHIPS REPORTING SYSTEMS
Ships’ REPORTING systems contribute to safety of life
at sea, safety and efficiency of navigation and
protection of the marine environment.

They are recommended for use by all ships within the


area. A ship shall use a mandatory ships’ reporting
system unless there are compelling reasons not to
use a system. Any such reason shall be recorded
on the ship’s log.

The master of a ship shall comply with the


requirements of ship reporting systems and report to
the appropriate authority all information required in
accordance with the provisions of each such
system.
VESSEL TRAFFIC SERVICES
Vessel traffic services (VTS) contribute to safety of
life at sea, safety and efficiency of navigation and
protection of the marine environment, adjacent shore
areas, work sites and offshore installations, from
possible adverse effects of maritime traffic.

They are recommended for use by all ships within the


area. A ship shall use a mandatory ships’ reporting
system unless there are compelling reasons not to
use a system. Any such reason shall be recorded
on the ship’s log.

The master of a ship shall comply with the


requirements of ship reporting systems and report to
the appropriate authority all information required in
SHIP MANNING
All ships shall be sufficiently and efficiently manned.

Every ship shall be provided with an appropriate


minimum safe manning document.

On all ships, to ensure effective crew performance in


safety matters, a working language shall be
established and recorded in the ship’s log-book.

English shall be used on the bridge as the working


language for bridge to bridge and bridge to shore
safety communications, as well as for
communications on board between the pilot and
bridge watchkeeping personnel.
BRIDGE DESIGN
The design and arrangement of bridge design,
navigation systems and equipment on the bridge,
and bridge procedures shall take into account:

Facilitating the tasks to be performed by the bridge


team.

Promoting effective and safe bridge resource


management.

Access to essential information


Indicating operational status
BRIDGE DESIGN
Allowing for continuous and effective information
processing and decision making by the bridge team.

Preventing excessive work and any conditions or


distractions on the bridge.

Minimizing the risk of human errors through monitoring


and alarm systems.
MAINTENANCE OF EQUIPMENT
Adequate arrangements to be in place to ensure that
the performance of the equipment is maintained.

GPS log

A Register book where positions of own ship and


associated data obtained from GPS such as course
and speed made good are recorded.

The data is recorded generally at 1 hour intervals.

Echo sounder log

A Register book where soundings of the sea obtained


by echo sounder is recorded along with the time of
sounding. The recording is made during entering
and leaving port harbors and transiting straits.

Met data

Met data is entered every watch at sea and in port


as part of entries required in the Mate’s or Deck
Log Book.

• Barometer reading
• Wind direction and Force
• Direction and height of waves
• Direction and height of swell
• State of sea and weather in words for example:
• Moderate sea & swell, cloudy, poor visibility
