Control and Operation of A Solar PV-Battery - Grid Tied System in Fixed and Variable Power Mode
The global increase in clean energy demand favors renewable non conventional
energy resources such as solar, wind , tidal Power etc... Out of which solar energy
gains more popularity due to is abundance in availability, simple construction and
economy in operation and maintenance.
This project dealts with the control and operation of a Solar PV system with
Battery tied to Grid .Here single stage topology is used where the PV arrays are
connected to the Dc side of the Voltage source Converter (VSC) .The other side of
the VSC is connected to the point of common coupling (PCC).The VSC acts as a
connecting link and can be utilized as shunt filter. In addition the VSC helps in
compensating the effect of Load unbalance due to non linear loads and maintains
sinusoidal grid currents.
Since the Power output from the PV array varies due to the ambient temperature
and solar insolation at the day time,a battery storage system is incorporated in
the PV-Grid connected system so as to support power in the peak load hours
.During Off peak hours the excess power generated is stored in the battery and
exported to grid as well.
The PV arrays operate at maximum power point (MPP)by perturb and observation
(P&O) based MPPT technique. The switching pulses are generated using
synchronous reference frame (SRF) theory without incorporating PLL to reduce
the system complexity.
The operation of the system under fixed and variable mode under steady state,
load variation, variable insolation and battery disconnected are to studied and
analyzed.
