2.A Lperformance: Energy Efficiency

Actuator performance is determined by metrics like speed, acceleration, force, energy efficiency, mass, volume, operating conditions, and durability. Static load is the maximum force capability when not moving, while dynamic load is the force capability during motion. Speed decreases as load increases, and operating conditions are rated using an IP Code system. Robotic payload refers to the maximum weight a robot arm can lift including any end-of-arm tooling. Compliance in robotics means flexibility to avoid damaging parts like eggs, while precision refers to a robot's ability to repeatedly reach the same position and orientation. Assembly robots can dramatically increase production speed and consistency for applications requiring precision like applying sealants. They offer flexibility to handle product variants

a lPerformance
Performance metrics for actuators include speed, acceleration, and force (alternatively, angular speed, angular
acceleration, and torque), as well as energy efficiency and considerations such as mass, volume, operating
conditions, and durability, among others.
Force
When considering force in actuators for applications, two main metrics should be considered. These two are static
and dynamic loads. Static load is the force capability of the actuator while not in motion. Conversely, the dynamic
load of the actuator is the force capability while in motion.
Speed
Speed should be considered primarily at a no-load pace, since the speed will invariably decrease as the load amount
increases. The rate the speed will decrease will directly correlate with the amount of force and the initial speed.
Operating conditions
Actuators are commonly rated using the standard IP Code rating system. Those that are rated for dangerous
environments will have a higher IP rating than those for personal or common industrial use.
Durability
This will be determined by each individual manufacturer, depending on usage and quality.
2.b.1. Robot payload is the weight a robot arm can lift. It includes the weight of the end of arm tooling (EOAT).
Maximum payload varies from robot to robot.
2. In industrial robotics, the term compliance refers to flexibility and suppleness. To define what compliance is, the
definition of non-compliance is useful. A non-compliant gripper will crush the egg and continue its given
operation. Compliance aims towards either process improvement (active) or human safety (passive).
3. Precision, also referred to as repeatability [in robotics], is the ability of an industrial robot to bring its end
effector to the same position and orientation, over and over again.
Accuracy – is how closely a robot can reach a commanded position. When the absolute position of the robot is
measured and compared to the commanded position the error is a measure of accuracy. Accuracy can be improved
with external sensing for example a vision system or Infra-Red. See robot calibration.
2.e. Assembly robots are used for lean industrial processes and have expanded production capabilities in the
manufacturing world. An assembly line robot can dramatically increase production speed and consistency. They
also save workers from tedious and dull assembly line jobs.
Applications for robotic assembly include automotive components, like pumps, motors and gearboxes. Computers
and consumer electronics are another excellent area, as are medical devices and household appliances. Assembly
robots are ideal for tasks demanding speed and precision like applying sealants and adhesives. Not only can they put
together parts that are too small or intricate for a human, but they work quickly and accurately without tiring or
making mistakes. They are good in applications where cleanliness is paramount, like pharmaceuticals and medical
device assembly, and they aren’t prone to debilitating injuries, like carpal tunnel syndrome, that come with repetitive
work.
In many industries, short-product lifecycles are a way of life, and here a robotic assembly line offers financial
advantages over “hard” automation. The assembly robot has the flexibility to handle variants of a product family,
even from cycle to cycle if equipped with vision or other sensors, and can be quickly and inexpensively reconfigured
if the product design changes. Even if the product line disappears completely, the robot assembly line can be
reconfigured quickly or the robots deployed elsewhere, which is not the case with dedicated assembly equipment.

Robotic assembly lowers costs while boosting quality and capacity. Unlike dedicated automation equipment, robots
are flexible, off-the-shelf machines that can be reconfigured or redeployed as needed. Perhaps of greatest
importance, robots are a mature technology, making them a low-risk, high-return investment.
