5.- Read the following text: “Remember, Remember the Fifth of November”
Guy Fawkes Night is a very British celebration. It celebrates a failed attempt to blow up the
Houses of Parliament in London. This was probably one of the first examples of terrorism,
only it didn’t work. It all happened on November the fifth, 1605. A group of Catholics who
were unhappy with their Protestant rulers wanted to bring the government down. Their leader
was a man called Guy Fawkes and his plan was called the Gunpowder Plot. Fortunately, the
plot was revealed to the authorities in an anonymous letter. In the morning of 5th November,
guards searched the cellars of the Houses of Parliament. They found 36 barrels of gunpowder
and caught one of the conspirators, Guy Fawkes. He was arrested, tortured and executed. In
Britain and former British colonies, this day is also called Bonfire Night.
The quote and poem 'Remember, Remember the Fifth of November' serves as a warning to
each new generation that treason will never be forgotten.
