Class Test Pavement Design

The document contains instructions for a class test on pavement materials and design. It includes two questions: 1) Design dowel bars given inputs like slab thickness, wheel load, load transfer efficiency, joint width, concrete strength properties, and dowel bar material properties. 2) Design a cement concrete pavement for a two-lane highway given inputs like flexural strength of concrete, modulus of subgrade reaction, modulus of concrete, Poisson's ratio, coefficient of thermal expansion, tyre pressure, traffic growth rate, temperature differential, design axle load, joint spacing, and axle load distribution data.

Instructions:
 Answer all questions
 Missing data, if any, may be assumed suitably.
 Calculator is allowed.

1. Design dowel bars for the following design inputs: Thickness of slab = 30 cm; design

A cement concrete pavement is to be designed for a two-lane highway (two-way). The total
two-way traffic is 2400 CVPD. The design parameters are given below:
Flexural strength of concrete = 4.5 MPa; Effective modulus subgrade reaction = 300
KPa/mm; Elastic modulus of concrete = 30,000 MPa; Possion’s ratio = 0.15; Coefficient of
thermal expansion = 10 X 10-6/C; Tyre pressure = 0.8 MPa; Rate of traffic growth = 7.5%;
Temperature differential = 20 oC.
The design single axle load is chosen as 160 kN. Spacing of transverse joints is 4 m and the
longitudinal joints are at 3.6 m from the edges.
The axle load survey date is given here under:
Single Axle
Axle load (kN) Distribution (%)
200 0.1
180 0.5
160 0.8
140 30.5
120 20.0
100 19.1
80 19.0
