CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM & ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Students in this generation are engaged on technology. Microsoft Word is one of

this and the senior high school students are required to know how to use the Microsoft
Word. They can create their resumes, research papers, and other documents using the
Microsoft Word.

Microsoft Word, word-processor software launched in 1983 by the Microsoft

Corporation. Software developers Richard Brodie and Charles Simonyi joined the
Microsoft team in 1981, and in 1983 they released Multi-Tool Word for computers that ran
a version of the UNIX operating system (OS). Later that year, the program was rewritten
to run on personal computers (PCs), such as the IBM PC, under Microsoft’s version
of DOS (disk operating system), or MS-DOS, and was renamed Microsoft Word. The
product was in direct competition with WordPerfect and WordStar, both of which were
introduced for PCs in 1982. (Grace Young, 2013)

Microsoft Word is the most popular word processing program on Earth and it is
available on a number of different operating systems with the two most prominent being
Macintosh and its native Windows. It all started in 1983 when Microsoft, a small but
growing computer company without a success to its name released a program called
"Multi-Tool Word." This was a basic word processor in plain text that allowed the
processing of basic text documents and for them to be saved, printed and edited in the
future. While the program itself was nothing special, the fact that it formed a baseline for
what would be in twenty year time is substantial. (Michele McDonough, 2009)
Background of the Study
It's the most popular word processing program in the world. One of the most
obvious benefits is its availability. Almost all windows users install Microsoft suit in their
computer system. It is available and used on all common computers. Microsoft word is
used to save documents. The documents can be copied to flash drive which serves as an

1
external memory for your computer. This allows you to use the saved documents
conveniently taking with you anywhere.

Microsoft is a graphical word processing program that users can type with. It is
made by the computer company Microsoft. The purpose of the MS Word is to allow the
users to type and save documents. Similar to other word processors, it has helpful tools to
make documents. Microsoft word, often called as word, carries with it a lot of benefits.
(Fareed Siddiqui, BBA, MBA-Fin, MPhil-Fin, (PhD), 2015).

Microsoft Word is a great tool as typing is faster than ever, It is easy to correct the
mistakes by just hitting the backspace or delete button, There are the templates for any type
of document and mail merge from a database so that you can easily send out the letters to
multiple people at a time. You can align the text whether at the center, right or left margins
or justified takes just one click, spelling and grammatical mistakes are pointed out instantly,
you can correct any mistakes which are made easily. The bullets and numbers are done
automatically and there is always an option to ask for help.

Theoretical Framework
Constructivism is basically a theory -- based on observation and scientific study --
about how people learn. It says that people construct their own understanding and
knowledge of the world, through experiencing things and reflecting on those experiences.
When we encounter something new, we have to reconcile it with our previous ideas and
experience, maybe changing what we believe, or maybe discarding the new information as
irrelevant. In any case, we are active creators of our own knowledge. To do this, we must
ask questions, explore, and assess what we know.

2
Figure 1. Constructivism

You might look at it as a spiral. When they continuously reflect on their

experiences, students find their ideas gaining in complexity and power, and they develop
increasingly strong abilities to integrate new information. One of the teacher's main roles
becomes to encourage this learning and reflection process.

Figure 2. Conceptual Framework

The researchers introduce a new conceptual framework to give knowledge and
basic tutorial on Microsoft Word a type word processing program.
The researchers used the IPO style paradigm. The researchers’ first step is to
develop an application that contains basic information about the Microsoft Word.
The process, the researchers will test the developed application on selected senior
high school students, then prepare all the needed questionnaires, then conduct a survey,

4
interview and research, retrieve all the questionnaire given to the respondents, and analyze
and interpret all the data gathered.
The output, the respondents’ will get full knowledge about the Microsoft Word.
Statement of the problem
The study entitled “A Computer Aided Instruction Tutorial for The Microsoft Word
Office for The Senior High School Students of Our Lady of Fatima University” aims to
know if the senior high school students knows how to use the Microsoft Word and also to
teach them how to use the Microsoft Word properly using the application that the
researchers developed. The study would seek to answer the following questions:
1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents?
1.1 Age
1.2 Gender
1.3 Strand
1.4 Grade
2. What is the respondent’s level of agreement on the benefits of the Microsoft Word
tutorial on their academic performance?
3. What is the respondent’s level of satisfaction on features of the developed
application?
4. What is the respondent’s level of agreement on the reason why students need to use
the application?

Objective of the study

General Objective
To help and give knowledge to students especially for those who are unfamiliar on
the Microsoft Word using the application that the researchers developed.

Specific Objective
ͦ To teach the senior high school students the basics of Microsoft Word.
ͦ To identify the common problems that they encounter using the Microsoft Word.
ͦ To know the advantage and disadvantage of the application that the researchers
developed.

5
Scope and Limitation
In general, the center of this study is to give knowledge and basic information about
the Microsoft word by developing an application. The developed application will be
distributed to the Gr. 11 senior high school students of Our Lady of Fatima University
Lagro Campus. The senior high school students will try the application and the researchers
will also provide a survey questionnaire for the students that will test the application that
the researchers developed. The contents of the developed application are limited or not all
the information that the users are looking for are included on the application.

Significance of the study

Some students are unfamiliar or don’t know how to use the Microsoft Word. In
senior high school it is necessary because senior high school students must know how to
make a research paper and resumes.
This study and the application that the researchers developed will be a great help
for the senior high school students to understand how to use the Microsoft Word. It will
benefit the senior high school students who doesn’t know how to operate the Microsoft
Word and also the teachers it will

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE & STUDIES

Foreign Literature

One of the most common problems with online learning content is that there is so
much of it now and it’s difficult to know where to start or who to turn to. Many go the
YouTube route and piece together videos from hundreds of tutorials from hundreds of
tutors hoping to become an expert at the end of it all. This simply won’t happen and will
just waste your time. (Ymer 2015).

Many take the route you’re about to take, they decide to enroll in an online training
course. Many charge hundreds, sometimes thousands of dollars for their courses which is
simply unaffordable for university students, recent graduates, the unemployed or those
looking for a career change. That is the reason why I have decided to keep this course as
low as possible even though I’m offering substantially more content than most of my
competitors here on Udemy. (Ymer, Udemy 2015).

I have been using Microsoft Office for over 20 years. I know the in’s and out’s and
the simplest ways of doing things. My delivery philosophy is simple, if I can’t get a 6 year
old to follow along and understand, than I’m not teaching correctly. I hate complicated
language and so do you. Nobody likes trainers who focus on impressing rather than
teaching and giving value to students. That is also why my lecture videos are as short as
can be and divided into small sections for easy consumption. So you won’t get unnecessary
chit chat or nonsense. I also assume that all my students are near-sighted and as such, I use
a special software tool that allows me to draw on the screen to show exactly what I’m about
to press as well as zoom in on small area’s so you don’t miss a thing. (Historia Reiss 2012).

Microsoft Word is the industry standard for creating professional documents. If

you're thinking of becoming a professional then you need to have Microsoft Word on your
resume if you're even thinking about becoming successful! This program will allow you to
create visually spectacular documents! You can create books, templates, pamphlets
and so much more on this program. I'll be teaching you all the basics of using this
amazing program. (Lala Darachinova 2013)

. The importance of education in the future of our country cannot be over-

emphasized. It was Jose Rizal who said that the youth are the fair hope of our fatherland.
And the molding of our youth into excellent and productive future citizens and leaders of
our country lies mainly in the hands of our teachers with whom children spend most of
their growing up and learning years. Unfortunately, most teachers, especially in the public
school system which has a limited budget and yet where most Filipinos undergo their
education, take on this crucial role with scant resources. Importance of computer
application is increasing day by day. In the latest decades of the Millennium winning
organization are those which are willing to integrate business strategy and computer

They have to tap their own ingenuity and resourcefulness to fully deliver on the
challenge before them. However, with the advent of the era of Information and
Communications Technology or ICT, teachers can now make use of ICT to expand and
enhance their teaching capability and methodology. The children learn better and faster
and become adept at using ICT tools themselves. Microsoft Philippines has long been a
partner of the educational community in promoting the use of technology in the education
sector. It organized the Partners in Learning (PiL) program in 2003.

9
The aim of PiL was to empower teachers and students to achieve their fullest
potential by providing greater access to the latest computer technologies, comprehensive
ICT skills development and locally-tailored training for teachers on ICT integration into
curriculum and learning. (Chris Abel, Architecture and Identity, 2000).

Information systems are a tool to support information management. Information

systems are increasingly being used in organizations with the objective of providing
competitive advantage. The information systems used by organizations can be grouped into
different types such as transaction processing system, management information system,
decision support system. Information Technology has heralded the advent of the
information society. (Jennifer Rowley 2005)

The information society may be a “virtual society”. The concepts of the electronic
classroom, the electronic office and electronic library have been explored. Information
system poses a number of issues on society in general, including: changing employment
patterns, archiving, and bibliographic control, security and protection, intellectual property,
marketplace issues and access.

An enrollment system is basically included in one of the classification of

information system that is stated by the author, thus it serves a tool to support information
management with regards to the student data, enrolment fees information and other with a
connection to the enrolment process. Every school gain competitive advantage of having
this system for they will have the capacity on handling important information at ease and
with security.

Previously, students were dependent on teacher and class discussions, textbooks
and other resource materials. But with ICT integrated in our curriculum, the students have
the freedom and wider resources for their learning," shared Reynold Q. Velos, Officer In-
Charge, PEHS. Using technology in education not only lets the students learn the concepts
fast and easy but also allows them to have a better understanding of why they are studying
those concepts and what they can do with it," said Donald Dungog, STEC-ICT Coordinator
/ Teacher - I, Science and Technology Education Center, Science and Technology High
School.

Genuine understanding comes from real and hands-on approach. The students have
the chance to see where their knowledge leads them and have a full grasp why they needed
to hone those skills to their benefit. With the help of technology, our learners are
intrinsically motivated. They are the ones who want to study more because there is so much
to learn," shares Dungog.

"Technology brings new information, new challenges, and new ways to learn. With
technology, new generalizations and outcomes have been demonstrated and performed by
our students with more resources and more content.

CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Method

The research applied descriptive research it is a study designed to depict the

participants in an accurate way. More simply put, descriptive research is all about
describing people who take part in the study.

Descriptive research can be explained as a statement of affairs as they are at present

with the researcher having no control over variable. Moreover, “descriptive studies may be
characterized as simply the attempt to determine, describe or identify what is, while
analytical research attempts to establish why it is that way or how it came to be”. An
important characteristic of descriptive research relates to the fact that while descriptive
research can employ a number of variables, only one variable is required to conduct a
descriptive study. Three main purposes of descriptive studies can be explained as
describing, explaining and validating research findings.

Sometimes an individual wants to know something about a group of people. Maybe

the individual is a would-be senator and wants to know who they're representing or a
surveyor who is looking to see if there is a need for a mental health program. (Devin
Kowalczyk, 2015)

Population, Sample Size and Sampling Technique

The respondents of this study will be senior high school students of Our Lady of
Fatima University. There will be 50 population of Gr. 11 students in any strands (STEM,
HUMSS, GAS, & ABM), applying the Slovin’s formula there will be 44 respondents to
be selected to test the application and answer the given survey questionnaires. Slovin’s
formula is the technique recommended to be used to determine the sampling size.

N= N/ (1 + N e2)

Where:

n= the sampling size

12
N= total population size

E= margin error

To use the formula, first figure out what you want your error of tolerance to be.
For example, you may be happy with a confidence level of 95 percent (giving a margin
error of 0.05), or you may require a tighter accuracy of a 98 percent confidence level (a
margin of error of 0.02). Plug your population size and required margin of error into the
formula. The result will be the number of samples you need to take.

The researchers will use convenience sampling it is a non-probability sampling

technique where subjects are selected because of their convenient accessibility and
proximity to the researcher.

The respondents are selected just because they are easiest to recruit for the study
and the researchers did not consider selecting subjects that are representative of the entire
population.

Description of the Respondents

The researchers will distribute 44 survey questionnaires to the Grade 11 students of

Our Lady of Fatima to answer the survey form. The respondents will be either in any
strands of senior high school students.

The respondents will be the first to test the application that the researchers
developed and answer the survey questionnaire about the application that the researchers
provided.

Research Instrument

The researchers instrument will be the survey questionnaires used in the study and
observation. The researchers prepared guided questions to answer by the respondents.
Survey questionnaires will used and provided to the senior high school students of Our
Lady of Fatima to give their responses about the researchers activity.
The researchers used the survey questionnaires to gather the information and
developed a tutorial application about basic information in Microsoft word to help the

13
students who are unfamiliar with Microsoft word. The proponent used the Likert scale to
address the measurement of the perception of the respondents about the proposed system.

Statistical Treatment

The following statistical tools were employed in the presentation and analysis of
data that the researcher gathered

Formula:

P = F/N X 100\

1. Percentage and Frequency Distribution. This was used to measure

the ratio of frequency of the respondent’s responses.

Wherein:

P = Percentage

f = Frequency/Value of the variable

N = the total value of all variables

14
2. Weighted mean. The information gathered were tabulated and
process manually and with the survey to determine the precise
interpret. Of the result to identify the level of computation and
awareness in identifying common difficult computation error of
the respondents, the researchers used the formula:

Formula: Me = Σ (W f)/N

Wherein:

M e= Weighted mean of population

Σ = Summation of the values of the value

Data Gathering Procedure

There are different data gathering procedures that you can use for a term paper. It
will depend on your convenience and the ease in gathering the required details that you can
use for the research results. In any case, we will discuss some of the major types of data
gathering procedures.

Data Mining-this procedure is simple. You can easily find many resource materials
where data and numerical figures are already tallied and presented. Usually, you can find
data among research institutions and academic centers. Data mining is simply using an
already published set of data.

Interviewing-is another example of a data gathering procedure. One benefit that

you can get from this process is that you can actually gather raw and reliable data direct
from your subjects. Although it is time consuming, you can still have very credible result
from this data gathering procedure.

Surveying-actually involves gathering responses from subjects through a written

medium. You will be distributing paper questionnaires for your subjects to answer. You
will then tally the results and use the data for your research. You may find an essay online
about how to write questionnaires.

15
These are just some of the basic data gathering procedures that you can utilize for
your research paper. Send us any inquiries about other concerns in writing a dissertation
paper.

CHAPTER 5

SUMMARY OF RECCOMENDATION & CONCLUSION

This chapter presents the summary, findings, and conclusions taken from the results
of the study. It also provides recommendations drawn from the conclusions which are
deemed important.

Summary

In senior high school level it is required for the students to learn how to use
Microsoft Word. It is for their research papers, resumes and other school papers that are
needed that only in Microsoft Word can be done so that the tutorial for Microsoft Word
will be helpful for the students on their academic performance.

The study aimed to develop a mobile tutorial application of Microsoft Word that
may help the senior high school students to learn how to properly use the Microsoft Word.
It is required for senior high school students to learn how to use Microsoft Word the
developed application may give full knowledge and understanding about Microsoft Word
and may give ease to those students who have difficulties using Microsoft Word.

The study also aimed to answer the respondent’s level of agreement on the benefits
of the Microsoft Word tutorial on their academic performance, their level of satisfaction
on features of the developed application that they have tested and also their level of
agreement on the reason why students need to use the application.

Findings

The data were analyzed and the following findings were formulated in accordance
with the specific questions given under the statement of the problem:

The researchers find out that the Respondents Level of Agreement on the Benefits of Using
Microsoft Word Tutorial in their Academic Performance are strongly agree in accessibility
by the mean of 4.48 in the general mean of 4.33 this shown that the application is very
accessible for the senior high school students because they find out that they can access the
information that they are looking for and learned something about MS Word from the
application itself by just operating it in their own smartphones or any smart devices.

23
The researchers find out that the Respondents Level of Satisfaction on the Features
of the Developed Application are satisfied in low memory consumption by the mean of
4.23 in the general mean of 4.09 this shown that the students are satisfied in the applications
size. The researchers find out that small sized application is what students looking for too,
because some of the students don’t have high quality phones and low memory, that’s why
the application is perfect for some of those senior high school students.

The researchers find out that the Respondents Level of Agreement on the Reasons
Why Students need to use the application are strongly agree in convenient and self - taught
by the mean of 4.36 in the general mean of 4.27 this just shown that a lot of students agreed
in conveniently of the application and self – taught. We find out that a lot of students can
benefits the information’s from the application by using it with their smartphones by their
own.

Conclusions

From the summarized findings, the following conclusions were drawn:

The researchers conclude that tutorial applications that are accessible and portable are
beneficial for senior high school students like the application that the researchers developed
as it gives sufficient information without connecting to the internet.

The researchers conclude that the size of the application must be considered when
developing an application because not all senior high school students has high capacity
phones.

The researchers conclude that tutorial applications must be useful and informative
because nowadays a lot of senior high school students wants to learn new things
independently as it gives them ease and can avoid confusions and pressures from asking
others to teach them.

Recommendations

From the drawn conclusions, the following recommendations are hereby directed
and forwarded:

24
The senior high school students should have the developed application because it
can help them for their academic performance because of the information that they can
acquire from the developed application.

The teachers also should have the developed application in case that they have
students who have difficulties on using the Microsoft Word the teachers can share the
application using its share feature. The teachers can give proper instruction with the help
of the developed application.

The students and teachers should have the application because the application is
simple, clear and efficient for them in case they encounter problems using Microsoft Word.

The researchers highly recommend the for students who wants to learn by themselves with
just an android device the application will give sufficient information for you to learn
without bothering others to teach you.
