CHAPTER 3

The Constitution
TOPIC SUMMARY
The Constitution was created more than 200 years ago to establish a stable government and
ensure the rights to which all U.S. citizens are entitled. The Constitution establishes three
branches of government—the legislative branch, the executive branch, and the judicial branch.
These branches work together and provide checks and balances so that no one branch has more
power than another. The Constitution may be changed, or amended, under certain circumstances,
but still maintains our basic form of government.
