Program Evaluation
Fall 2019
Memo to Principal
I had the opportunity of evaluating the media center at West Chatham Elementary
School alongside Mrs. Bigbie using the 2016 Judy Serritella Exemplary Library Media Program
Self-Evaluation Rubric. After completing the evaluation, Mrs. Bigbie and I found that the media
program is exemplary in 14 areas, proficient in 5 areas, and basic in 2 areas.
It is evident that the media center is an exemplary 21st century media program. Mrs.
Bigbie ensures that the media center meets the AASL standards for 21 st-century learners,
encourages student’s love for reading, and provides access to digital tools and technology to
enhance instruction. She and Mrs. Hernandez continuously support students and provide
assistance to teachers before, during, and after the school day. The media center meets FTE
requirements and uses technology throughout the school to support the curriculum. Mrs.
Bigbie collaborates with other librarians within the district, has the support from administration
and district representatives, has an effective library media advisory committee, has a current
media policy, and ensures that the budget is spent appropriately for stakeholder’s needs.
As we completed the rubric, we did find areas for growth. Growth can be made in the
areas of collaborative planning with teachers, collecting student data and designing student
activities to promote student achievement, assessing student achievement, incorporating
various technology tools to enhance instruction, flexible scheduling for students, providing
instruction on GALILEO, and planning staff development sessions for staff.
By following the action steps to address areas of growth, I know the West Chatham
media center can improve all of its areas to exemplary.
Sincerely,
Salem Teske
Action Steps
Area 6 was rated as basic due to the media specialist not often being involved in assessing
student achievement. The media specialist does not have input regarding school or district wide
assessments. This area can be moved to proficient through the media specialist collaborating
with teachers to create projects for students to present in the library or within their classrooms
and providing resources to assist with grading.
Basic: Area 15 – GALILEO Virtual Library is used to provide Georgia students and teachers
access to exceptional on-line resources
Area 15 was rated basic due to teachers and students lack of using GALILEO resources. This area
can be moved to proficient through providing more staff development training on using
GALILEO. As well as the media specialist collaborating with teachers to design lessons to
instruct students on how to perform research on the GALILEO platform.
Proficient: Area 10 – Flexibly scheduled library media center access for students and teachers
Area 10 was rated proficient due to flexible scheduling available for teachers and students
throughout the school day. The media center also has flexible scheduling before and after
school for teachers. This area can be moved to exemplary through keeping the media center
open later after school hours (till 6:00 p.m.) for students to have access to.
