DESIGN CALCULATION OF TEMPORARY WORKING PLATFORM FOR EXECUTION OF PILING WORKS

1. INTRODUCTION:
The bridge over the Backkhali river consists of 595.0 m PC box girder at Kusturi Ghat under
upazila sadar, District Cox’s Bazar. The bridge will be constructed under supervision of Local
Government Engineering Department.

2. SCOPE OF WORKS:
The scope of the works is limited to design a temporary bailey bridge in the river on which
construction of cast in-situ box girder will be done.

3. ASSAMPTION:
Cast in-situ box girder shall be concreted in different sequences. So some concrete will be
matured in that time and load transfer methodology will be different. The sequences are
a. Bottom slab casting will be done first. In these stage the load of the green concrete and form
work shall be transferred to transom and BT truss.
b. Web of the box girder will be concreted in this stage. Load of the slab and green concrete
shall be transferred to the transom and BT trestle.
c. Top slab will be concreted in this stage. The web and the bottom slab will be partially
matured in this time. So the load the top slab partially carried by the composite of the first
and 2nd stages and partially will be carried by the BT truss from overhang part.

4. CODES, STANDARD AND REFERENCES:

Following codes and standard has been adopted to design the member of the platform
- BNBC – 2014 (Bangladesh National Building Code)
- ACI – 318
- AISC 360-16 (American Institute of Steel Construction)
- Foundation analysis and design by Joseph E. Bowles
- Pile Foundation design by Tom Linson
- Contract drawings from the client

5. ANALYSIS SOFWARE:
STAAD Pro 2006 SS6 has been used to analysis the beam, frame and the structures.

6. LOAD CALCULTION:
Dead Load

Dead loads are all the self-weight of the structural plate beams, girder, vertical steel pipes,
bracing angles.

Live LOAD:

- Weight of cast in-situ box girder.

- 2.5 kN/m2 load for formworks systems.
- Assume 2.5 kN/m2 live load will be working during construction period.

WIND LOAD:

Wind Load has been calculated according to BNBC -2014, Part-6, Chapter-2.

Location Cox’s Bazar

Basic wind speed = 80m/s
qz = 0.000613KzKztKdV2I
Kz = Velocity pressure coefficient = 1.05 for exposure Type B and height = 15m
Kzt = topographic factor = 1 for flat surface
Kd = wind directional factor = 0.85 for main wind frame structure
I = importance factor = 0.77

qz = 0.000613*1.09*1*0.85*0.77*(80)2 = 2.18 kN/m2

Cp = (0.8+0.5) = 1.3
G = 0.85
So wind pressure, qz = qzGCp = 2.18*0.85*1.3 = 2.80 kN/m2

Approximate Projected area = (3.5+1)*65 = 292.5 m2

Wind load = 292.5*2.8 = 827.5 kN

Page 4 of 36
DESIGN CALCULATION OF TEMPORARY WORKING PLATFORM FOR EXECUTION OF PILING WORKS

SEISMIC LOAD

Seismic load has been calculated according to BNBC -2014.

Seismic zone coefficient, Z = 0.28

The spectral acceleration for the design earthquake is given by the following equation:
2 𝑍𝐼
𝑆𝑎 = 𝐶
3𝑅 𝑆
Sa = Design spectral acceleration (in units of g), which shall not be less than 2/3*ZI*β
Z= Seismic zone coefficient = 0.28
I = Structural importance factor = 1.0
R = Response reduction factor = 6.0

So, Sa = (2/3)*(0.28*1/6)*Cs = 0.0311*Cs

Cs = typical shape of elastic response coefficient.
Period, T = Ct*(hn)m
For steel moment resisting frame
Ct = 0.0724, m = 0.8
Say height of structure (mid height of bridge), hn = 17.8 m above ground level.
T = 0.0724*(17.8)^0.8 = 0.72
For Soil Type = SC, S = 1.15, TB = 0.2; TC = 0.6; TD = 2.0 (Table – 2.5.4)
So TC < T < TD
Cs = 2.5*S*ƞ*(Tc/T)
Ƞ = damping correction factor = 1.0 for 5% damping.
So, Cs = 2.5*1.15*1*(0.6/0.72) = 2.40
Therefore, Sa = 0.0311*Cs = 0.0311*2.40 = 0.075
Base shear force shall be calculated according to following formula-
V = SaW = 0.075W
W = seismic weight of the structure
= Dead weight of platform+ Weight of Bridge
= 3.5*15*65+335*10.5*2+255*3*12 kN
= 18547 kN
So, base shear, V = 0.075*18547 = 1391 kN

Soil & Structure MAHL LGED

Page 5 of 36
DESIGN CALCULATION OF TEMPORARY WORKING PLATFORM FOR EXECUTION OF PILING WORKS

CURRENT LOAD:

Velocity of water in river, v = 3.0m/s

So the pressure head, h = v2/(2g) = 0.46 m
Pressure on the steel pipe = hg = 0.46*1000*9.81 N/m2 = 4.51 kN/m2
So the load on steel pipe = 0.5*4.51 kN/m2 = 2.26 kN/m

Case-02: Concreting Web of Box Girder

In case-02 the concrete of bottom slab will be hardened which will carry the load of the green
concrete of the web. So green concrete load may be considered as a uniform load over slab.

So in these case total acting load = load of case -01 + green concrete load of case-02

Green concrete weight = 3*0.75*1.72*24 = 92.88 kN

Additional 25% for vibration = = 23.22 kN

Add 1 kN/m2 formworks = 0.75*1*3.5*2*3 = 15.75 kN

Total = 92.88+23.22+15.75 = 131.185 kN

This load will be distributed in 5.5m

So uniformly distributed load on transom = 131.185/5.5 = 23.98 kN/m

Case-03: Concreting Top Slab of Box Girder

In case-03, the concrete of web will be hardened. So web and bottom slab will act as a
composite rigid section which will carry the self-weight and the weight of the top slab.

Fig: Section properties of The Section After Casting Web. Extracted from AutoCAD

Moment of inertia, Ixx = 6606714716160 mm4

Section modulus, Zxx = Ixx/Ymax = 6606714716160 /1880 = 3.51x109 mm3

Yield strength of the concrete, f’c = 25 MPa

So cracked strength, fcr = 0.667√f’c = 3.34 Mpa

Cracked moment capacity of the section, Mcr = fcr Zxx = 11737.46 kNm

√𝑓𝑐′
Allowable strength in concrete, 𝑣𝑐 = 6
=0.83 MPa

So section shear capacity = 3000*600*3*0.83 = 4482 kN

Page 9 of 36
DESIGN CALCULATION OF TEMPORARY WORKING PLATFORM FOR EXECUTION OF PILING WORKS

Area of the section = 13672824 mm2

= 13.67 m2

Weight of the section = 13.67*24 = 328.08 kN/m

25% additional for construction load, vibration, etc = 82.02 kN/m

Weight of the section including top slab, W = 410.1 kN/m

For the 10.5 m span, Maximum moment, Ma = WL2/8 = 5651 kNm

Which is less than cracked moment, Mcr (11737.46 kNm).

Maximum shear force, Va = WL/2 = 2153 kN

Which is less than Vc (4482 kN)

So whole weight of the box girder can easily take the constructed part in case -2.

Finally, we can conclude that though there will be additional load of the top slab, Transom and
BT truss will be reluctant of those additional load carrying.

So Transom and BT Truss will be designed for the load of case-1 and case-2.

DESIGN CALCULATION OF TEMPORARY WORKING PLATFORM FOR EXECUTION OF PILING WORKS

A. LOAD CALCULATION:

Fig: load from BT truss to Girder

Load from BT truss to girder = 1620 kN at inner Pipe

Load from BT truss to girder = 226 kN at outer Pipe

Lateral Load from Seismic Load = 1391 kN

This load will be distributed on 24 nos of pipe

So lateral load on each pipe = 1291/24 = 58 kN

A 2D computer model has been developed in StaadPro with following member size-

a. Vertical MS pipe = 600mm dia with wall thickness = 12mm

b. Horizontal member and cross bracing with 2<100x100x8 mm MS angle

Following loads are applied on the structure-

a. Self-weight of the structure.

b. Load from the girder
c. Lateral load

Soil is modeled by spring constant with the value of modulus of lateral subgrade reaction.
Values are taken from the books “Foundation Analysis and Design 5th Edition by Joseph E.
Bowles” by interpolating the values-

Capacity has been calculated from the book of “Pile foundation design 5th edition by
Tomlinson”.

From the above chart 15.0m embedment of the pipe in the soil will give the necessary
capacity.

Maximum reaction = 1320 kN

Load bearing capacity of 600mm dia pipe = 1977 kN for 15.0m Depth

8. CONCLUSION:
Component of temporary BT Bridge like transom, BT Panel, girder, bracing angle and steel
pipe capacity have been checked against all possible loads imposed on the structures and all
members are safe enough to carry that loads without failure. So the temporary BT Bridge is
safe for the construction of cast in-situ box girder.
