1. INTRODUCTION:
The bridge over the Backkhali river consists of 595.0 m PC box girder at Kusturi Ghat under
upazila sadar, District Cox’s Bazar. The bridge will be constructed under supervision of Local
Government Engineering Department.
2. SCOPE OF WORKS:
The scope of the works is limited to design a temporary bailey bridge in the river on which
construction of cast in-situ box girder will be done.
3. ASSAMPTION:
Cast in-situ box girder shall be concreted in different sequences. So some concrete will be
matured in that time and load transfer methodology will be different. The sequences are
a. Bottom slab casting will be done first. In these stage the load of the green concrete and form
work shall be transferred to transom and BT truss.
b. Web of the box girder will be concreted in this stage. Load of the slab and green concrete
shall be transferred to the transom and BT trestle.
c. Top slab will be concreted in this stage. The web and the bottom slab will be partially
matured in this time. So the load the top slab partially carried by the composite of the first
and 2nd stages and partially will be carried by the BT truss from overhang part.
5. ANALYSIS SOFWARE:
STAAD Pro 2006 SS6 has been used to analysis the beam, frame and the structures.
6. LOAD CALCULTION:
Dead Load
Dead loads are all the self-weight of the structural plate beams, girder, vertical steel pipes,
bracing angles.
Live LOAD:
WIND LOAD:
Wind Load has been calculated according to BNBC -2014, Part-6, Chapter-2.
SEISMIC LOAD
CURRENT LOAD:

In case-02 the concrete of bottom slab will be hardened which will carry the load of the green
concrete of the web. So green concrete load may be considered as a uniform load over slab.
So in these case total acting load = load of case -01 + green concrete load of case-02
In case-03, the concrete of web will be hardened. So web and bottom slab will act as a
composite rigid section which will carry the self-weight and the weight of the top slab.

Cracked moment capacity of the section, Mcr = fcr Zxx = 11737.46 kNm
√𝑓𝑐′
Allowable strength in concrete, 𝑣𝑐 = 6
=0.83 MPa
= 13.67 m2
So whole weight of the box girder can easily take the constructed part in case -2.
Finally, we can conclude that though there will be additional load of the top slab, Transom and
BT truss will be reluctant of those additional load carrying.
So Transom and BT Truss will be designed for the load of case-1 and case-2.

A. LOAD CALCULATION:
A 2D computer model has been developed in StaadPro with following member size-
Soil is modeled by spring constant with the value of modulus of lateral subgrade reaction.
Values are taken from the books “Foundation Analysis and Design 5th Edition by Joseph E.
Bowles” by interpolating the values-
3 3 0 C 0 0
35 2 50 S 280000 336000
C. STRUCTURAL 2D MODEL:
Capacity has been calculated from the book of “Pile foundation design 5th edition by
Tomlinson”.
From the above chart 15.0m embedment of the pipe in the soil will give the necessary
capacity.
Load bearing capacity of 600mm dia pipe = 1977 kN for 15.0m Depth
8. CONCLUSION:
Component of temporary BT Bridge like transom, BT Panel, girder, bracing angle and steel
pipe capacity have been checked against all possible loads imposed on the structures and all
members are safe enough to carry that loads without failure. So the temporary BT Bridge is
safe for the construction of cast in-situ box girder.
