WRITE SWITCH Read SWITCHES: PROGRAM end INSTRUMENT Write Rhythm patterns into RAM a Ta oseratanes i ? ye output ata to @ m : VOICING end IED cirontts JUNE 20, 1979 CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION The OR-78 is a computerized rhythm aschine whose rhythms are controlled by the resident computer ‘hrough internally stored programs. Rhythns other than stored can be prograned as desired by using the Dullt-in expansion ROM and RAMs. Sequen- ¥iel program order is outlined in the Plow chart end the timing diagram shows relationship anong principal circuits waveforms. ( see previous tage } ‘The following description is composed of two gece “ions: General Introduction and Detailed Func- tion, Title numbers refer to those in flow chart. OBNERAL INTRODUCTION POWER or When power is first applied, two oscillators start oscillation: MASTER OSCILLATOR, determines rhythm tempo, ranging from 5Hz to 100He; CLOCK GENBRATOR, generates timing pulses for the 8043 in each step cycle. 2. 23. SWITCH SANNING Even in the stop mede, the computer needs to store a data on syitching status so as to output rhythm patterns immediately after the START/STOP switch is depressed. And also s status data is heeded at the deginning of a measure. ‘The ewitch reading to obtain a switch set. is refereed to as switch scanning. From Port 2 of 8048, signals are routed through the Decoders 1C107 ana T0108, and the switeh matrix to Port 1. Coubinstion of two port's pins according to switch settings becomes a data on switch status. After a rhythm runs, scanning ie Gone onee for each measure. p data 3. PROCESSING end PREPARING DATA The 6048 prepares the next data according to the internal program based on awitch scanning data. 4. SCANNING CANCEL VoISE swrTcH Since ewitch scanni measure during rhythm running, evitching during the measure is effective in the subsequent meas- ure. However, "CANCEL VOICE" is scanned every cycle to cancel the unwanted voice at once when ever it is specified. ng is performed once Zor one 5. SENSING START/STOP SWITCHING 4s long as Tl, the START/STOP sensing input terminal of pPD6048 is kept low, the program routine is not allowed to break loop through 1-5, returning to 1. When the START/STOP switch is pushed while a rythn stops, Tl is pulled to high to start a rhythe and falls to low when the START/STOP is pushed again{ stop) 6. SENSING MASTER OUTPUT PALLING Although each circuit operates its given task in sequence under the control of timing pulses from the CLOOK GENERATOR, each program step mist keep pace with oscillation of the master osc. (rhythm tempo) ty sensing the falls and rises of waveforms of the master oscillator. A program step proceeds to the next step when the master's trailing edge goes to negative. 7. SENSING WRITE SWITCHING When the WRITE switch is tapped, the write hold cirewit 10118 is set, applying high level to INT, and causing program routine to jump to 73. 7B. WRITING PROGRAM REYTHN Scanning signals from 6 and 7 of the decoder 10- 108 tell the computer which position of INSTRU NENT and which PROGRAM pueh switch is selected. Then the data on FROGRAM rhythm are stored into ‘the RAMs IC102 and 10103 under the control of a Progran from the ROM IC104. The RAMs provide memory size for two measures for each voice. 8. SENSING MASTER RISING The computer exeoutes @ program, synchronizing ito otep with a rhythm tempo. As soon as 20 reovives the rise of a master square, 8040 Starts to produce rhythm patteras by sending Gata and control signale oxt from Port 1 and 2, 9. OUTPUPTING DATA Tue Port 1 this time serves as an output port, feeding data for rhythm patterns (VOIORS) and LEDs (TRACK) to the latehes Ic112-10116 vnich selectively latch them in sequence under the control of signals coming fron the Port 2 through the Decoder IC107, The computer psi forms the entire loop once for one cycle of master oscillator and 48 times per measure, FUNCTION —Detail— 1. After running, scanning eiganls are outpated once at the onset of 2 measure. This aeans thet changing of any switch set! during a measure is ignored by the computer unless ewiteh setting is kept unchanged until the next scanning. Similarly, changing the MBASURE of VARIATION in AUTO mode will be made into effective only after previousely specified measure(s) has passed. In MANUAL mode, VARIATION change during 2 meseure io enabled at the beginning of the next measure by holding that chenging formation until the next scanning is per- formed. Por this purpose the MANUAL VARI hold circuit is used which consists of IC119. When the START/STOP ewitch ie pressed vaile a rhythm stops, the RS flip flop Tc119 a pulse from 0 of (pins 1-6) is reset by T0108, switching pin 3 to Hand pin 6 to Le Depressing the MANUAL switch during rhythm run- ning sets the FP TC1294/3, holding pin 6 or pin 13 at H. When a master oat- put goes low, a scanning pulse is generated from T of 10108,efter inverted vy To12l, it is NANDea with pin 13 input, causing pin 11 to develop a nogative going pulse which is detected by the 8048 through PL6, this MARUAL "OI" information.
