MEC 310 Homework 6 (Due: Tuesday, 11/20/2019, in Class)

This document contains instructions for a homework assignment with 6 problems related to gear trains and cam mechanisms. Problem 1 involves calculating tooth counts for a gear train to achieve a specified speed ratio. Problem 2 involves determining the angular velocity of a planet gear in an epicyclic gear train. Problem 3 involves calculating the angular velocity and direction of an output gear in a compound gear train. Problem 4 involves determining angular velocities for an arm and planet gear in an epicyclic gear train where the ring gear's velocity is given. Problem 5 involves designing a cam profile and plotting jerk curves to open an exhaust valve. Problem 6 involves determining angular speeds and directions for sun gears in an epicyclic gear train where the arm's velocity is given.

MEC 310 Homework 6

(Due: Tuesday, 11/20/2019, in class)

Note: You have to show all your steps clearly. If you skip steps points will be cut.

1. The speed ratio of the gear train shown below is to be 1:12. The module pitch of gears 1 and 2
is 3.125 mm and of gears 3 and 4 is 2.5 mm. Calculate the suitable number of teeth for gears. No
gear is to have less than 24 teeth. Gear 1 is the driver and gear 4 the output. (15 points)
2. For the epicyclic gear train shown below, the Sun gear rotates with angular velocity ωin = 2
rad/s in counterclockwise direction and the Arm rotates with angular velocity ωA = 3 rad/s, also
in counterclockwise direction. Determine the angular velocity of the planet gear N3. The numbers
of teeth for the Sun and the Planet are N2 = 25, N3 = 45. (15 points)
3. For the compound gear train below, the input gear N2 rotates with angular velocity ωin = 15
rad/s in counterclockwise direction. Determine the magnitude and direction of the angular
velocity of the output gear 7. . The number of teeth for each gear is as shown in the figure. You
must write down the formula for computing the train ratio and show all the steps. (10 points)
4. For the epicyclic gear train shown below, the Ring gear rotates with angular velocity ω4 = 20
rad/s in clockwise direction. The Sun gear is held fixed. Determine

(a) the angular velocity of the Arm;

(b) the angular velocity of the Planet gear.
The number of teeth for the sun and planet gears are 50 mm and 25 mm respectively. (15 points)
5. You are tasked with designing a cam for operating the exhaust valve of an engine. The speed
of the cam shaft is 4Π rad/second. The valve opens during the rise phase of the follower. The
duration through which the valve opens (i.e., the difference between the time when the valve
starts to open and the time when the valve goes to the fully open position) is 0.125 seconds. You
are also required to ensure that the jerks remain 0 at the beginning and end of the valve opening
phase. The maximum rise of the cam follower is 6 mm.

(a) Design a polynomial displacement curve for the cam follower for opening the valve. You can
use MATLAB if required. (20 points)

(b) Using MATLAB, plot the SVAJ curves for the cam follower motion. You need to attach your
code as well as the plots. (5 points)
6. For the epicyclic gear train shown below, the number of teeth are as shown in figure. Given
that the arm rotates at 50 rad/s in the clock wise direction and the sun gear 2 is fixed, what is the
angular speed and direction of motion of sun gears 3 and 4. (20 points)
