1. Executive Summary
Social responsibility is important for every business. Economic criteria alone cannot justify the
existence of business organizations. Social, moral and ethical aspects of business decisions are as
important as economic aspects to judge the success of a business. A socially responsible firm not
only meets the needs of society but also creates a long-term and sustainable market for its
products.
At Tata Motors, CSR efforts are focused on improving the quality of life of underprivileged
communities neighboring their business operations. The Company’s interventions focus on
health, education, employability, and environment, impacting over 6,44,000 lives in India.
Tata Motors has consistently been recognized for yielding excellent results and creating
significant value for all. Tata Motors association with distinguished organizations across the globe
has been instrumental in the achievement of greater outcomes through the CSR programs.
2. Conceptual Framework
The concept of Corporate Social Responsibility was first mentioned in 1953 in the publication
‘Social Responsibilities of the Businessman’ by William J Bowen. However, the term CSR become
only popular in the 1990s.
For a long time in the past, profit maximization was the sole business objective but this view no
more holds good. If companies want to survive and maintain growth in the market, if they want
to become market leaders, they have to sacrifice part of the profits in favor of groups other than
owners.
Today, the focus has changed from economic aspects to social aspects of the business decisions.
Business organizations help to solve a broad range of social problems like poverty, crime,
pollution, etc. They are expected to raise the level of education, create job opportunities, uplift
the minority and weaker sections of society.
Managers have begun to realize that they owe the responsibility to society as they owe to
business enterprises. “Social responsibility is an organization’s obligation to benefit society in
ways that transcend the primary business objective of maximizing profit.”
• The CSR approach is holistic and integrated with the core business strategy for addressing the
social and environmental impacts of businesses.
• CSR needs to address the well-being of all stakeholders and not just the company’s
shareholders.
• Philanthropic activities are only a part of CSR, which otherwise constitutes a much larger set of
activities entailing strategic business benefits.
1. A collection of policies and practices linked to the relationship with key stakeholders,
values, compliance with legal requirements, and respect for people, communities, and
environment: and
2. The commitment of business to contribute to sustainable development, commonly
understood as sustainable development is the ability of the current generation to meet its needs
without compromising the ability of future generation to meet theirs.
The Companies Act, 2013 has introduced the idea of CSR to the forefront and through its disclose-
or-explain mandate, is promoting greater transparency and disclosure. Schedule VII of the Act,
which lists out the CSR activities, suggests communities be the focal point. On the other hand, by
discussing a company’s relationship to its stakeholders and integrating CSR into its core
operations, the draft rules suggest that CSR needs to go beyond communities and beyond the
concept of philanthropy. It will be interesting to observe the ways in which this will translate into
action at the ground level, and how the understanding of CSR is set to undergo a change.

7. Suggestions
The concept of the private-public partnership (PPP) should be applied in the effective
implementation of CSR i.e.programs government and business houses should act in collaboration
for the cause.
• The Human Resource department (at the political and private level both) should be
entrusted with the responsibility of measuring and evaluating in CSR activities. It can be
done in two forms – (a) direct results, such as economic and financial savings (b) indirect
results like increase in employee satisfaction, less absenteeism, less employee turnover
evaluated by staff surveys
• Periodic review of the CSR activities should be conducted by every business entity so as
to identify the pitfalls and the areas left out.
• Innovation should essentially be a matter of concern; be it searching the untouched areas
and scope of CSR or the formulation of CSR strategy or the implementation thereof.
• NGOs should be encouraged to act in collaboration for the CSR activities under different
schemes and projects as they play a crucial role in the upliftment of the masses.
• Tata Motors should increase its footprint on the Disaster Management Plan and Relief
Measures to improve the lives of affected people
Page 31 of 33
• Health Sector always creates tremendous opportunities to organisations like Tata
Motors.Apart from their continuous efforts to reduce malnutrition / other common
health problem, they may come up with a nation wide programme to provide “TATA
Emergency Ambulances” to each District /Taluk with multispecial supports .This could
create huge impact to the lives of thousands of common people who faint daily and lose
their lives due to delay in immediate medical attention / delay in bringing them to the
nearby hospitals.
• Tata Motors should come up with various insurance schemes for the Tribal and lower
communities in cooperation with State and Central Governments, to ease the impact of
livelihood against disasters and natural calamities
• It has been observed that startups or new companies to be started should be of social
nature to the society and business nature to the company like hospitals and educational
institutes. This will be helpful in fulfilling the social and commercial objectives.
• The contribution in Poverty & hunger eradication and women empowerment has reduced
with the passage of time and no contribution is seen in the last two years.
8. Conclusion
The study concluded that Tata Motors is doing commendable work in different sectors as these
are notified by the government, but the company is performing these activities prior to the
government notification. The study found the different type of work done by the company and
the benefits provided to society. Company has done work in different nature and in different
areas which have led to the benefit of people in different areas and in different sense. In general,
the CSR policies of Tata Motors cover the general topics mentioned in the CSR frame of reference,
i.e. labour, environment and more economic related issues. A comparison between the CSR
frame of reference and the practice of Tata Motors in India shows a small gap between them as
the comparative table has shown that almost every variable in the sample companies is covered.
The study has shown a large number of people benefitted by these work in this study.
