Lettering

This document provides instructions for architectural drafting 1. It discusses drafting tools, lettering, scaling, dimensioning, orthographic projection and architectural applications. Specifically, it outlines the requirements for good lettering including using single stroke Gothic letters, guidelines, proper spacing and strokes. It emphasizes uppercase letters, light guidelines, sizing and fractions. The goal is to produce lettering that is uniform, legible and can be executed quickly.

LETTERING

About many years ago, after early industrial drawing alphabets

was developed based upon the GOTHIC LETTERS that could be easily
made by a single stroke. This could be called single stroke GOTHIC LETTERS
are very familiar to our present letters and most commonly used lettering
style on architecture, engineering and other technical works. This can be
lettered vertically or inclined.

According To ANSI Standard “Lettering on drawing must be legible

for easy and rapid execution”
REQUIREMENTS FOR GOOD LETTERING
1. Uniformity in Lettering
a. Never mix capital case and lower case letters on a drawing
b. Vertical letters is most required and most preferred
c. Height and Width of letters must be executed equal. Height of
letters depends on size of paper.
d. Use normal spacing of letters. The space between each letter
must appear to be equal. The space to one words is
equal to one letter of the alphabet.
Don note use extended or compressed lettering.

2. Use GUIDELINES for lettering – this is used to maintain equal height of

letters and prevent irregularities. A good drafter always used
horizontal guidelines. Guidelines are spaced according to the
height of letters. The letter should touch the exactly each
guidelines and should never cross the guidelines.

Guidelines are drawn very lightly and enough to see. If made lightly
enough, guidelines NOT BE ERASED after the lettering is finished in pencil or
in ink.
REQUIREMENTS FOR GOOD LETTERING
3. Never use fancy or decorative lettering. Use correct strokes of letter

4. Avoid abbreviating words or names. Abbreviate only if needed.

5. Do Letters in Freehand. Basically lettering is form of freehand sketching.

6. Lettering done in pencil should be done with fairly soft sharp pencil and
should be clean – cut and dark.

7. Letter done in ink. All works should be finish in ink. The pen to be used
depend upon the thickness of stroke design and depend upon the height
of letters.

8. Stroke of letters must be done once only. Do not repeat stroke of letters
once write.
ESSENTIALS OF HAND LETTERING
1. USE THE SINGLE STROKE, VERTICAL GOTHIC STYLE OF LETTERING

2. USE UPPER CASE (CAPITAL) LETTERS ONLY.

3. ALWAYS SKIP A SPACE BETWEEN ROWS OF LETTERS.

4. ALWAYS USE VERY LIGHT GUIDELINES

5. NORMAL LETERING IS MADE 1/8” OR 3MM HIGH.

6. TITLES SHOULD BE LETTERED ¼” OR 6MM HIGH.

7. FRACTIONS ARE LETTERED TWICE THE HIEGHT OF NORMAL LETTERS.

8. FRACTION BARS ARE ALWAYS DRAWN HORIZONTAL.

9. USE MEDIUM (B, HB, F, OR H) LEAD FOR NORMAL LETTERING.

10. USE A HARD (4H TO 9H) LEAD FOR DRAWING GUIDELINES.

LETTERING COMPOSITION

To give all the information necessary for the complete

construction of a machine or structure, there must be added to
graphical language of lines describing it shape, the figured
dimension, notes on materials and finish and a descriptive title all of
which must be lettered freehand in style that perfectly legible, uniform
and capable of rapid execution.

So far as it appearance is concerned there no part of a drawing

so important as the LETTERING. A good drawing may be ruined, not only
in appearance but also in usefulness, by lettering done ignorantly or
carelessly, illegible figures are very apt to cause mistakes in the work.

NOTE:

1. Draw Guidelines for both upper and lower case letters, use PENCIL
2. Ink all letterings, use technical pen pt.05/06
3. AVOID ERASURES
