This document discusses three topics related to improving concrete: 1) Using steel scrap/dust as a replacement for fine aggregates in concrete can create high density concrete over 2600 kg/m3. This saves resources and landfill space while preserving natural materials. 2) Adding nano-silica fume to concrete can improve its properties and status as a high-tech material through nanotechnology. Research is exploring uses of nano-particles like titanium oxide and carbon nanotubes in concrete. 3) Utilizing waste steel scrap from workshops by adding 5% by weight of coarse aggregate can increase the strength of concrete when used with and without wire mesh reinforcement. HIGH DENSITY CONCRETE BY USING STEEL SCRAP (STEEL DUST)

Now a day’s concrete especially the conventional concrete is using worldwide in the

construction industry mainly with the ingredients as water, cement, traditional silica-

calcareous aggregates (sand and gravel) and chemical admixtures (super plasticizers,

air entrainers, set retarders etc,).and many experiments are going on the concrete to

replace the ingredients like coarse aggregates, fine aggregates and cement and there is

a possibility of replacing the fine aggregate with iron dust is useful for the development

of high density concrete. The concrete with density greater than 2600 kg/m3 is called as

high-density concrete. It not only saves the environment and land fill space but also the

extraction of natural raw materials (sand). Preserving the natural raw materials i.e., fine

aggregate is a matter of sustainable development that to ensure the sufficient resources

for the future generations. High density concrete is mainly used in mainly used in

railways, crane counter weights, radiation shielding in nuclear plants or other radiation

related units like medical aspects.

In this the water cement ratio and the percentage of replacement was considered based

on the several concrete mixes at different w/c ratios to determine the favorable w/c ratio

for the feasible mix proportion by this the most economical and feasible w/c ratio is 0.5

for the proportions of replacements as 10%, 20%, 30%.

EFFECT OF NANO SILICA FUME ON CONCRETE

"Nano technology is the study of the control of matter on an atomic and molecular scale.

It deals with the size 100 nanometers or smaller, and involves developing materials or

devices within that size". Nano concrete is one of the most active research areas that

encompass a number of disciplines including civil engineering and construction

materials, currently, the most active research areas dealing with cement and concrete

are: understanding of the hydration of cement particles and the use of Nano-size

ingredients such as titanium oxide, silica, carbon Nano-tubes, and Nano-sensors. If

cement with Nano-size particles can be manufactured and processed, it will open up a

large number of opportunities in the field of ceramics, high strength composites etc. It

will elevate the status of Portland cement to a high tech material in addition to its current

status of most widely used construction material. The main objective of this thesis is to

outline some of the applications of nanotechnology in concrete and comparing this

concrete with the ordinary concrete.

UTILIZATION OF WASTE STEEL SCRAP FOR INCREASE IN STRENGTH OF

CONCRETE- WASTE MANAGEMENT

Concrete has an extensive role to play in the construction and improvement of our civil

engineering and infrastructure development. Its great strength, durability and veracity

are the properties that are utilized in construction of Roads, Bridges, Airports and

Railways. In present days the construction industry is in need of finding cost effective

materials for increasing the strength of concrete structures. It is the time to think about

sustainable development by reducing the wastes generated or reusing it. Hence an

attempt has been made in the present investigations to study the performance of

addition of waste materials steel lathe waste fiber (CNC lathe waste) from workshop 5%

by weight of coarse aggregate with and without wire mesh. Experimental investigation

was done using M20 mix and tests were carried out as per recommended procedures

by relevant codes. Total of 9 specimens of scrap concrete and PCC were made. This

paper aims to have a comparative study between CNC scrap concrete with and without

wire mesh and conventional concrete in M20 concrete. The test parameters include

compressive strength, Rebound hammer and UPV test of conventional concrete and

steel scrap in concrete with and without wire mesh.
