7 Elements in The Human Body

This document provides an outline for a lesson on elements in the human body. It includes 3 learning objectives: 1) enumerate and describe properties of elements and their uses, 2) discuss importance of certain elements in the human body. The lesson proper involves an activity identifying elements in foods eaten in a day and their roles. Key elements that make up carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals in the body are discussed. The lesson emphasizes that our bodies need many different elements to support the complex biochemical reactions in cells.

Time Frame 5 weeks

Competencies
C1. Demonstrate understanding of the properties of elements based on periodic atomic
properties.
C2. Appreciate the importance of knowing the properties of elements and how they are
used in technology.

ELEMENTS IN THE HUMAN BODY

Time Frame 2 sessions

I. Learning Objectives
At the end of the session, the students must be able to:
1. Enumerate and describe the properties of elements and their uses; and
2. Discuss the importance of certain elements in the human body.

II. Subject Matter

A. Topic: Elements in the Human Body
B. References
1.Department of Education, Culture and Sports. (1991). Science and
Technology III. Quezon City: Book Media Press, pp. 273.
2.Brown, Theodore l., LeMay, H. Eugene Jr., and Bursten, Bruse E.,
Chemistry the Central Science, New Jersey: Prentice Hall, pp. 989-1003.
3.Hill John W., and Kolb, Doris K., Chemistry for Changing Times, 7th
Edition, London: Prentice Hall International, pp.453-550.

B. Materials
Periodic Table
Resource books from Libraries
Labels of food products

III. Learning Tasks

A. Recall and Motivation
1. What elements most impressed you and why?
2. What elements do you think make up our body?

B. Lesson Proper
1. Activity: “The Foods we eat”
a. List your food for one day.
b. Try to get the labels of the food that you ate. If they are not available. Try
to get information on the ingredients of the food. List the elements or
compound indicated there.
c. What is the role of each element? Make a table that will list the element,
its source, and its role in the body.

2. Discussion / Concept Formation

a. The different foods can be classified into carbohydrates, fats proteins,
vitamins, and minerals. What are the uses of each?
b. What elements make up each of these materials?

YOU MAY END SESSION 1 THIS POINT.

C. Generalization
1. CARBOHYDRATES are generally used for fuel in our bodies but they are
also used as membranes and fibers, and as mass of our flesh (glycogen). They
are made of C, H, and O.
2. Fat are used to provide protective material for our internal organs and as
reserve energy. They are made of C, H, and O.
3. Proteins are used for important body functions. Enzymes are proteins that
catalize biochemical reactions. Some proteins make up part of the mass of our
flesh, blood, skin, bone, hair, and nails. They are made up of C, H, O, N, S.
4. Vitamins help enzymes perform their functions. There are many kinds, but
they are generally made of C, H, and O.
5. Minerals also assist enzymes and vitamins so that the reactions may go
smoothly. They may be taken in as ions, like Na+ , Ca2+, Mg2+, Zn2+, etc. we
also need phosphorus because P is part of phosphates that make up our DNA,
ATP, and ADP.

D. Application/ Valuing
Our body needs many different elements. Our body is a complex organization of
cells, which run many reactions. For them to function efficiently, we need help
from catalyst s like enzymes, coenzymes, vitamins and minerals.
