1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 SCOPE
The Technical Manual contains general and technical information on Raytheon’s
Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS).
Chapter
Chapter Title
Number
Chapter 1 General Information - contains descriptive and technical material on the C21/C29 ECDIS. A brief system
overview of a typical configuration is also included.
Chapter 2 Installation - covers installation, setups and initial power-on guidelines.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
This ECDIS Is an Aid To Navigation. Its accuracy can be affected by many factors such
as equipment defect, environmental conditions, or improper operation. It is the user’s
responsibility to exercise common prudence and navigational judgement at all times.
1.2 SAFETY
NOTE
HIGH VOLTAGE IS USED IN THE OPERATION OF THIS EQUIPMENT
DEATH ON CONTACT MAY RESULT
IF PERSONNEL FAIL TO OBSERVE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
NEVER WORK ON ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT UNLESS THERE IS ANOTHER PERSON
NEARBY WHO IS FAMILIAR WITH THE OPERATIONAL HAZARDS OF THE EQUIPMENT
AND WHO IS COMPETENT IN ADMINISTERING FIRST AID. WHEN THE TECHNICIAN IS
AIDED BY OPERATORS, HE MUST WARN THEM ABOUT DANGEROUS AREAS. WHEN-
EVER POSSIBLE, THE POWER SUPPLY TO THE EQUIPMENT MUST BE SHUT OFF BE-
FORE BEGINNING WORK ON THE EQUIPMENT. TAKE PARTICULAR CARE TO GROUND
EVERY CAPACITOR LIKELY TO HOLD A DANGEROUS POTENTIAL. WHEN WORKING
INSIDE THE EQUIPMENT, AFTER THE POWER HAS BEEN TURNED OFF, ALWAYS
GROUND EVERY PART BEFORE TOUCHING IT. BE CAREFUL NOT TO CONTACT HIGH-
VOLTAGE CONNECTIONS OR 115, 230, 280 OR 400-VOLT AC INPUT CONNECTIONS
WHEN INSTALLING OR OPERATING THIS EQUIPMENT. WHENEVER THE NATURE OF
THE OPERATION PERMITS, KEEP ONE HAND AWAY FROM THE EQUIPMENT TO RE-
DUCE THE HAZARD OF CURRENT FLOWING THROUGH VITAL ORGANS OF THE
BODY.
EXTREMELY DANGEROUS POTENTIALS GREATER THAN 200 VOLTS EXIST
IN SOME OF THE UNITS COVERED IN THIS MANUAL
POTENTIALS LESS THAN 200 VOLTS MAY CAUSE DEATH UNDER CERTAIN CON-
DITIONS. REASONABLE PRECAUTIONS SHOULD BE TAKEN AT ALL TIMES.
NOTICE: CALL FOR HELP FIRST, THEN ATTEND THE CASUALTY IMMEDIATELY.

4. When used with an appropriate Auto Pilot, the ECDIS prompts to acknowledge
course change. Once accepted, auto executes turns using predetermined
turning radius and cross track error limit.
5. Visual and audible alarms when vessel is off track, approaching shallow depths,
wheel over point or guard zone boundary line.
PathfinderÒ/ST MK2 ECDIS can display and record the ship’s track for future playback.
An on-screen electronic bearing line allows rapid range and bearing measurements. The
electronic log tracks ship’s position, speed, bearing, cross-track error, date, time,
weather conditions, helm changes, and depth. The log can be stored, transferred to
another computer system, or printed.

1.3.3.2 Options
The design of the PathfinderÒ/ST MK2 ECDIS is such that the options or kits may be
integrated into the basic configurations on initial system installation or added later to an
existing installation. Systems delivered from the factory will always be standard configu-
rations, options will be in simple to install kits. The installer completes the system instal-
lation and option installation in the field.
1.3.4.1 Digitizer
The PathfinderÒ/ST MK2 ECDIS is designed to interface with a chart digitizing table.
This permits the mariner to plan routes on paper charts and to load information from
paper chart into PathfinderÒ/ST MK2 ECDIS CM 93--3 database.
1.3.4.2 Printer
A printer provides chart printing capability.
The PathfinderÒ/ST MK2 ECDIS Console is a dedicated system and therefore access to
other Windows NT programs is restricted. Certain ECDIS supported functions can be
accessed by an authorized user.
1.3.4.4 Dongle
The Pathfinder/ ST ECDIS system is a security based system. You must have a dongle
connected to computer port LPT1 on the ECDIS Processor for the unit to work. There
are two types of dongles: a Service Dongle and a User Dongle. When ECDIS is turned
on without a Dongle attached, ECDIS powers up into the Demonstration Mode.

1.4 ECDIS
Figure 1--3, (below) illustrates a simplified block diagram of a typical ECDIS (Electronic
Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS). ECDIS has the capability of integrating
and prioritizing several different positioning systems to come up with a reliable solution
even when one or more positioning sensors is not functional. Other ship sensors and
systems are also integrated such as engine monitoring sensors, RADAR and ARPA (Au-
tomatic RADAR Plotting Aid) and autopilot.

database
The electronic chart database is at the center of an ECDIS. Charts for ECDIS are ENC
vector charts with detailed information on bathymetry, shipping channels, navigational
aids (NAVAIDs); hazards, tides, and currents. These charts, combined with precise posi-
tioning enable the ECDIS to predict bottom clearance and alert the navigator of potential
groundings. For areas where coverage with ENC data is not given ECDIS provides use
of raster charts.
Usually, an ECDIS will incorporate information from a depth sounder to combine the ba-
thymetric chart data, the tide, the current, and the positioning calculations.
The important point to distinguishing ECDIS from e.g. ECS (Electronic Chart System) is
that they are designed to be a legally accepted replacement for carrying paper charts on
board the vessel. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) and its member states
will eventually sanction the use of ECDIS in lieu of paper charts. Hence, great effort has
been made to specify and test equipment and data standards in order to achieve this
goal safely.

SERVICE MANUAL
2.4.5 Bonding
The purpose of bonding ECDIS equipment to a local earth ground is to prevent radio fre-
quency interference (RFI) and to minimize the chance of lightning damage.
Proper site planning must include provisions for installing a low resistance ground sys-
tem path as close as possible (2 foot maximum) to each unit in the system.
Copper strapping, 60 mil thick by 1-1/4-inch wide is provided for electrical bonding of the
PathfinderÒ/ST MK2 ECDIS Display and Processor units to the ground system.
These straps should be as short as possible.
While copper is the recommended material for bonding straps, its place in the galvanic
series as listed in Table 2--7 presents a corrosion problem if not treated properly. Use of
a non-migratory grease compound such as NO-AL-OXÒ will minimize galvanic interac-
tion and ensure a long-lasting, low resistance connection.
The length of the bonding strap should be cut to form the shortest possible path to the
bonding point. All surfaces should be carefully cleaned and coated with NO-AL-OXÒ
compound prior to assembly.
Placing the bonding strap under an equipment mounting bolt is not considered proper
bonding procedure.

2. Avoid running cables in areas that are exposed to extremes of heat such as
steam lines.
3. Protect cables with tubing if there is a possibility that the cable will be subjected
to mechanical abrasion or chafing.
4. When existing cable runs are used to hang and secure the cables, ensure that
there is no possibility of radiated interference.
5. Determine cable entry point into the base unit. Cable entry to the base unit can
be from the bottom or from an access plate at the left rear of the cabinet.
Table 2--8
1. The system power source should be capable of handling the originally installed
equipment, as well as taking into consideration the possibility of adding options
or future expansion.

PathfinderÒ/ ST ECDIS uses the provided information for accurate the display of naviga-
tional data. First, it draws the ship symbol so that it is proportional to the specified vessel
size. More importantly, because PathfinderÒ/ ST ECDIS knows where on the ship the
antennas are located, it can offset the ship symbol from that point, giving you an accu-
rate representation of your position relative to other objects. In addition, PathfinderÒ/
ST ECDIS uses the information to more accurately draw tracks and the course line, as
well as to calculate the necessary safety alarms.
After entering the position of each antenna, you will also need to enter a Common Refer-
ence Point position. A Common Reference Point is a position to which each antenna
location is adjusted through a numerical calculation. The adjustment is made so that all
navigation information displayed on ECDIS is from the same common point. This will
provide you with the most accurate navigational information possible. The Common
Reference Point position is labeled DR in the Nav Device drop down list in the Ship Info
dialog box. The Common Reference Point location may be anywhere on the ship, but is
normally at the conning station.
NOTE
If PathfinderÒ/ST ECDIS switches to a lower priority
device, it will automatically use the antenna location
(adjusted to DR) specified for that device.
NOTE
Ship information cannot be entered or changed
without a service dongle installed. This information
should be entered by the service technician at the
time of installation.

The format of the data should be described in the device’s user’s manual. If the data
sentences are unintelligible (they may contain “Greek” letters or a series of small
squares), then the navigation device may not be properly connected to the computer or
the navigation setup may be incorrect. For a list of abbreviations which might appear in
the data monitor window, please refer to Chapter 1, section 1.3.4.5.

2.9.4 Used?
Select the type(s) of device(s) you have integrated with PathfinderÒ/ST ECDIS, i.e.,
GPS, Loran-C, Transit, Decca, or Syledis.
We recommend that you select Dead Reckon as an available “device” and assign it a
ID number greater than zero. In the event that all navigation devices fail, you can
simulate your ship’s course using PathfinderÒ/ST ECDIS’s Dead Reckon feature.
2.9.4.2 ID Number
Click on the scroll bars to assign an ID number to each available device.
PathfinderÒST ECDIS can use data from only one device at a time. By prioritizing the
available devices, you tell PathfinderÒ/ST ECDIS which device it should use to position
your ship. (PathfinderÒ/ST ECDIS cannot distinguish between two devices of the same
type; each has the same ID number).
If the device with the highest ID number fails, PathfinderÒ/ST ECDIS will automatically
switch to the device you assigned the next highest priority. To mark the event, Path-
finderÒ/ST ECDIS places a ship mark labeled with a one or two letter abbreviation for
the new navigation device.
NOTE
When positional input deteriorates, PathfinderÒ/ST ECDIS displays a message indicat-
ing the deterioration. PathfinderÒ/ST ECDIS also indicates when a change is made to a
new positioning device.
2.9.4.3 Datum
For each Navigation Device which provides own ship position, you must select the
datum on which geographic coordinates are based.
2. Click on those devices that you have integrated with PathfinderÒ/ST ECDIS.
4. Click on the down arrow next to each device’s datum list box and select
individually the datum from which the device is receiving data. Click on OK.
1. Selecting the Exit command under the Main menu bar and using the Utilities
menu.
2. Selecting the Date and Time under the Integration bar menu.
Date/Time option allows the operator to change the date, change the time, and when
using the Utility Menu, the operator may change the time zone of your system’s clock.
You can also select whether or not you want the computer to automatically switch to
Daylight Savings Time.
NOTE
It is important that your system date and time be accurate, since PathfinderÒ/ST
ECDIS uses this data to record important information.
This field provides you with a list of time zones. Each option shows the difference from
Greenwich Mean Time in parenthesis and gives examples of cities and countries in that
time zone.
The date field is divided into three sections (month, day, year) which must be changed
separately. For example, to change the date from March 10, 1995 to March 11, 1995,
you would highlight the day field “10” then click on the up arrow. The “10” would change
to an “11”.
The time field is divided into four sections (hours, minutes, seconds, AM/PM) which must
be changed separately. For example to change the time from 4:14:41PM to 5:14:41PM,
highlight the number “4,” click on the up arrow and the “4” changes to a “5”.
