Tute 10

The document is a tutorial sheet containing 6 questions about antenna and propagation concepts: 1) It asks to explain Maximum Usable Frequency (MUF) and calculate MUF for a 2500km radio link with 200km ionosphere height and 5MHz critical frequency. 2) It asks to calculate MUF for a 2000km radio link with 200km ionosphere height and 6MHz critical frequency. 3) It asks to explain critical frequency and calculate critical frequencies for ionosphere layers with given maximum electron densities. 4) It asks to calculate maximum electron concentrations given observed critical frequencies of 2.5MHz and 8.4MHz for E and F layers. 5) It asks to calculate the frequency

Tutorial Sheet – 10
14B11EC613 – Antenna and Propagation Date: 2/5/2018

Q 1. Explain MUF and give any method of calculating. A high frequency radio link has to be
established between two points at a distance of 2500 Km on earth’s surface. Considering
the ionospheric height to be 200 Km and its critical frequency 5MHz, calculate the MUF
for the given path.

Q 2. A high frequency radio link has to be established between two points on the earth 2000 km
away. If the reflection region of the ionosphere is at a height of 200 km, and has a critical
frequency of 6 MHz, calculate the MUF for the given path.

Q 3. What do you understand by the term critical frequency? Calculate the critical frequencies
for the F1, F2 and E layers for which the maximum ionic densities are 2.3x106, 3.5x106 and
1.7x106 electrons per c.c. respectively.

Q 4. The observed critical frequencies of E and F layers at some high altitude area on some
particular time are 2.5MHz and 8.4MHz respectively. Calculate the maximum electron
concentrations of the layers.

Q 5. At what frequency a wave ust propagate for the D region to have an index of refraction
0.5? Given N=400 electron/c.c. for D region.

Q 6. Determine the change in the electron density of E-layer when the critical frequency
changes from 4MHz to 1MHz between mid day and sun set.
