BFC 43103 Project

This document outlines the requirements for a group foundation engineering project. Students will work in teams to 1) obtain borelog data and site information for a school building project, 2) determine column loads, 3) analyze soil properties, 4) justify the design of shallow or deep foundations, 5) consider soil improvement needs, and 6) comment on special construction considerations. The project aims to develop teamwork skills and apply classroom knowledge to a real-life design situation. Teams must submit a written report and presentation by Week 13 covering all aspects of the assigned task.

BFC 43103 - FOUNDATION ENGINEERING

GROUP PROJECT (SEM 1 2018/2019)

DESIGN OF FOUNDATION

PROJECT TASK
Working in team, obtain the related information on topic chosen by your Project Director.
Critically examine and perform the following aspects for every case:
1. Obtain a borelog and identify its characteristics. Each group should obtain a borelog of
different location.
2. Identify the project (school building) to be designed and the site.
3. Determine the load to be carried by every column.
4 Study and analyse the given soil profile.
5. Find out other properties if you need them.
6. Justify the design considerations, bearing capacity and settlement.
7. Design of foundation - shallow or deep? Please justify.
8. Any soil improvement prior to foundation construction?
9. Special considerations in construction, if any.
10. Comments.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

1. It is an exercise of team work and coordination in carrying out a study within a given time
frame.
2. Students are trained to relate knowledge acquired from lectures with a real-life situation
by critically assessing and learning from past cases.
3. Students are encouraged to engage in engineering practice professionally.
