Assignment No.2

The document provides instructions for Assignment No. 2 for the course EE-357: Power System Analysis, which includes 13 problems related to calculating inductance, capacitance, reactance, and other electrical properties of transmission lines with different conductor configurations. Students are instructed to show their work, clearly label their name and registration number, and not plagiarize or copy solutions from others. Problem 1: 10 Marks
A 3-phase, 50 Hz, 30 km long power line has four conductors as shown in Figure 1 (1.5 cm
diameter). The phase wires a, b and c carry the currents: Ia = -30 + j24 A, Ib = -20 + j26 A and
Ic = 50 - j50 A respectively. The fourth wire n is a neutral wire and carries zero current. If the
line is transposed, calculate
(a) Flux linkages of the neutral wire
(b) Voltage induced in the neutral wire
(c) Voltage drop in each of the three-phase wires

Figure 1

Problem 2 10 Marks
A 60-Hz single-phase, two-wire overhead line has solid cylindrical copper conductors with
1.5 cm diameter. The conductors are arranged in a horizontal configuration with 0.5 m
spacing.
Calculate in mH/km
(a) the inductance of each conductor due to internal flux linkages only,
(b) the inductance of each conductor due to both internal and external flux linkages, and
(c) the total inductance of the line.

Problem 3: 10 Marks
Rework Problem 2 if the diameter of each conductor is: (a) increased by 20% (b) decreased by
20%, without changing the phase spacing. Compare the results with those of Problem 2
Problem 4: 10 Marks
A split-phase, single-phase transmission line consists of conductors a and b in parallel forming
one path whereas conductors a' and b' in parallel form return path as shown in Figure 2. The
current is equally shared by two parallel conductors. Calculate the total inductance per km of
the line assuming the radius of each conductor to be 1.2 cm.

Figure 2
Problem 5: 10 Marks
A 3-phase, single circuit transmission line consists of three ACSR conductors per phase with
horizontal configuration as shown in Figure 3. Calculate the inductive reactance per km at 50
Hz assuming the radius of each sub-conductor in the bundle to be 1.725 cm.

Figure 3

Problem 6: 10 Marks
Find the GMR of a stranded conductor consisting of six outer strands surrounding and touching
one central strand, all strands having the same radius r. Draw Appropriate Diagram as well.

Problem 7: 10 Marks
If the per-phase line loss in a 60 km long transmission line is limited to 60 kW while it is
delivering 100 A per phase, determine the required conductor diameter, if the resistivity of the
conductor material is 1.72×10-8 Ωm.

Problem8: 10 Marks
A transmission-line cable, of length 3 km, consists of 19 strands of identical copper conductors, each
1.5 mm in diameter. Because of the twist of the strands, the actual length of each conductor is
increased by 5%. Determine the resistance of the cable, if the resistivity of copper is 1.72 µohm-cm at
20 0C.

Problem9: 10 Marks
A 3-phase, 50 Hz, transposed transmission line is to be designed in flat horizontal configuration
as shown in Figure 4. The line reactance is 0.405 Ω/km. Assuming the radius of each conductor
to be 2.568 cm, determine the phase spacing D.
Figure 4

Problem 10: 10 Marks

A three-phase 60-Hz, 125-km overhead transmission line has flat horizontal spacing with
three identical conductors. The conductors have an outside diameter of 3.28 cm with 12 m
between adjacent conductors. (a) Determine the capacitive reactance-to-neutral in ohm-m per
phase and the capacitive reactance of the line in W per phase. Neglect the effect of the earth
plane. (b) Assuming that the conductors are horizontally placed 20 m above ground, repeat
(a) while taking into account the effect of ground.

Problem 11: 10 Marks

A three-phase, double-circuit, fully transposed line is shown in Figure 5. The conductor

diameter is 2 cm. Determine the inductance per phase of the line. What is the reactance per
phase of the line if the power system frequency is equal to 50 Hz? Assume that the line is 30
km long.

Problem 12: 15 Marks

A three-phase double line circuit line is shown in figure 6 is composed of 300000-cmil 26/7
Ostrich conductor. Find the 60Hz inductance and capacitive susceptance in ohms per mile per
phase and siemens per mile per phase respectively.

Figure 6
Problem 13: 15 Marks
Six ASCR dark constitute conductors Drake at 60Hz double circuit three-phase line as shown
in figure 6. The changes in figure 6 is that vertical spacing however is 14ft, the longer horizontal
distance is 32ft and shorter horizontal distance is 25ft, Find:
(a) The inductance per phase (in H/mi) and inductive reactance (in ohm/mi).
(b) The capacitive reactance to neutral and charging current and charging current in A/mi
per phase and per conductor at 138kV.
