Formative and Summative Assessment

Formative assessment is used by teachers to evaluate student comprehension and provide feedback through methods such as observations, questioning, discussions, journals, assignments, projects, and quizzes. Summative assessment evaluates student learning at the end of a unit or course through rubrics, tests, presentations, portfolios, reports, evaluations, and surveys. Both are used to improve instruction and ensure students are meeting learning objectives.

Formative and Summative Assessment

Formative

 Observations
o A teacher will partake in observations in the classroom to observe their students. This is
a form of formative assessment. Taking notes to record student actions is one way to
complete observations.
 Questioning
o Teachers can question their students to find out things. Things can include topics of
interest so teachers know what their students will focus and pay attention to. Students
can also question each other.
 Discussion
o Small group and large group discussions can take place in the classroom. Discussions
are a great way of formative assessment. Students can participate in the discussions.
Discussions can be about a book the class just read, a movie, or a science project.
 Journals
- Journals are a great way for students to keep track of their thoughts. Also, teachers may use
this tool to make sure that students are grasping and understanding a certain are or topic.

 Assignments
o Students can be assigned homework or projects to do during the school year. These can
either be group assignments or individual work. Assignments are usually turned in for a
grade.
 Projects
o Projects can give students the opportunity to use their creative sides. Projects are a
great way to let students show their knowledge of a concept they have just learned.
 Non-graded Pop quizzes
o Non graded pop quizzes are great to keep students on track. Having these random
quizzes are a great way to make sure that students are always keeping up to date with
their readings and assignments.
 Learning/Response Logs
o These logs are a great way for teachers to make sure that students are doing the
assigned work and readings in the class. Logs give students the chance to make note of
what they have learned in a specific reading or assignment. These are also a great way
for discussions to start.
 Graphic Organizers
o Graphic organizers are a great way for students to compare and contrast two or more
concepts. Also, it is a great tool to use in the classroom by letting students physically
see the differences and similarities pertaining to these concepts.
 Reviews
o Reviews are a great way to keep children up-to-date in material that might be coming
up on an exam or homework assignment. This is a great tool to use as a brushing up
tool on the topics. Also, this is a great opportunity for students to listen in on important
notes they may have missed.

Summative

 Rubrics
o Students would have rubrics attached to graded projects/assignments so they could see
how they are being graded.
 Written Tests
o Students will have written tests which makes them use their writing and English skills.
Sentence structure and other forms of writing analysis is used in this form of
assessment.
 Creative Assignments
o Creative assignments give students the space to use their creative side while working on
projects. This can be anywhere from picking the topic of the assignment to using their
imagination while creating the assignment.
 Presentations
o Presentations give students the chance to showcase their work to the teacher and to
the rest of the class. Presentations give the opportunity for the student to be the
teacher.
 Portfolios
o Portfolios give the students a chance to showcase their work they have been completing
throughout the school year.
 Written Reports
o Written reports let the students do their own research on a given topic, in which they
must write a report on. The student will then present their report and information to
the rest of the class.
 Peer/Self Evaluations
o Peer evaluations are when the students evaluate each other’s work. Self-evaluations
are when the students examine and analyze their own work.
 State Assessments
o State assessments are a series of tests that test and track each individual student
progress in given areas in the curriculum. An example of this would be the PSSA tests.
 Chapter and Unit Tests
o These are tests that test the student’s knowledge on either the entire chapter or a unit.
These tests are given after all the information has been stated, which would be at the
end of the chapter.
 Survey
o Surveys are given to collect samples of information from students pertaining to a certain
topic.
 Final Paper
o A final paper is assigned to students at the end of a term or semester. Usually this
assignment is based off of a certain topic, such as an accumulation of topics touched
over the school term.
