Reflection on Culture and Communication

Communication and culture go hand in hand. Communication is the process which allows

people to share feelings, ideas, and thoughts with each other. However, the vital aspect of the

communication process is completely understanding the other party in the communication

process. I a person is unable to understand the symbols in the communication process, then they

may be unable to communicate with each other. Symbols and signs in the communication

process are important, and the parties involved should be able to interpret them. However, a

person should ensure that their facial expressions are in line with the messages put forward

considering that misinterpretation may occur in the process. As a result, differences in

communication are often evident by cultural differences within a particular group. Therefore

people who come from the same culture tend to understand each other and are aware of the

essential elements in the communication and therefore can easily understand each other.

Intercultural communication is often complicated and requires the parties involved to have basic

understanding of other cultures in order to ensure that the communication is successful.

People from different cultures are guided by different values, and there are elements that

they may consider as inappropriate while this may not be the case when other cultures are

concerned. Communication, in this case, is essential both from the words spoken as well as the

signs the individuals portray which increases the level of uncertainty when different cultures are

involved. Intra-cultural communication is more comfortable considering that people understand

each other which make communication more effective in the process. Aspects such as

interpersonal relationships and religion are essential in the communication process are essential

when reducing the level of uncertainty in the communication process. People who hail from the
same religion tend to speak in a similar manner which in the process simplifies the

communication process.

Even though this is the case, changes in technology have been vital in the communication

process as it has made it easier for intercultural communication to be promoted. Therefore

technology changes including internet, computers, satellites, radios, phone, and television have

been instrumental in facilitating the communication process especially from people from

different cultures. Intercultural communication requires those involved to be aware of the

messages and the signs they are using in the communication process. In today’s society, diversity

within society has become the main highlight, and this requires people from different cultures to

communicate with each other. This includes understanding what other communities or culture

consider offensive in communication and knowing how to avoid them. Furthermore, the

businesses world requires people from different cultures to communicate with each other, and

those require them to thoroughly understand the communication process and the symbols used

while communicating with each other.
