The definite article “the”


We use the to talk about a specific thing or group. It is specific because:
- There is only one. e.g. The Earth, the Moon, the sky, etc.
The sky is clear today.
- We explain, describe or understand clearly which one we mean.
e.g. The boy next door is my friend. (Which boy? The boy next door.)
That’s my cell phone. The blue one. (Which one? The blue one.)
This is a good film. The actors are very funny. (Which actors? The actors in this film.)

Present continuous (affirmative)

We use the present continuous to talk about actions that are happening at the moment
when we speak, or around this general time. E.g.
- My friends are going to Sri Lanka today.
- She is living in Madrid at the moment.
We form the present continuous with am, are or is and the main verb with -ing. E.g.
- I am reading a good book at the moment.
- You/We/They are having lunch now.
- He/She/It is sitting in the garden.

2A Warm up

We are going to
the top!

A.Read the text.

Like Everest and K2, Kangchenjunga is in the Himalayas. It is 8,586 meters high and it is a
very difficult and dangerous mountain to climb. It’s cold and windy here. Sometimes you can’t
see the paths. There is snow and ice but there aren’t any houses or cabins on the mountain!
Imagine it’s May 2009. A team from Spain is climbing to the top of Kangchenjunga. Meet the
team.
Ferrand Latorre is making a film about the climb for television. There is snow on the mountains
and it is very beautiful. He is the first to reach to the top at 2:30 p.m.!

Edurne Pasaban is the team leader. She gets to the top two hours after Ferran.
There are 14 mountains in the world that are over 8,000 meters, and Edurne ambition is to be
the first woman to climb them all. This is number 12! The other members of the team - Asier
Izaguirre, Juanito Oiarzabal and Alex Chicon get to the top with Edurne.

One member of the team, Jorge Egocheaga, does not feel well. He doesn’t go to the top. When
they are coming down, Alex stays with Edurne. They have problems because of the cold but they
find help. They are all OK!
