Please read this document for late-breaking or detailed information about Nuance PaperPort 14
SE that could not be included in its other documentation. Up-to-date information and a knowledge
base are available on the PaperPort support web page
(http://www.nuance.com/support/index.htm). You can access this directly from inside PaperPort
14 SE, using the Product Information button in the Help ribbon.
If your computer does not meet all of these requirements, the installation will continue, though
some features might not work on your system. Ensure that you have the most recent Windows
Service Pack available.
Note
Windows XP 64-bit Edition is not supported.
1
Application compatibility
The following Nuance products are supported by this release:
· Capture SDK 17, 18
· OmniPage 17, 18, 19
· PDF Converter Professional 6, 7, 8
Installing PaperPort 14 SE
The installation program provides easy step-by-step instructions. Follow the guidance on each
screen to install the software. Installation and un-installation require Administrator rights.
PaperPort SE installation comprises the following elements that are installed in a single
installation process:
· Nuance PaperPort 14 (also includes ImageViewer and Scanner Setup Wizard)
· Nuance PDF Viewer SE
· PaperPort Image Printer (32-bit or 64-bit)
PDF Viewer SE is not installed if the top-line Nuance product PDF Converter Professional is
detected on the computer because it provides all the functionality of PDF Viewer SE, and much
more additionally.
To install PaperPort, launch the Autorun executable, select an installation language, accept or
change the program target location. The program location must be a local folder on your
computer. If PDF Viewer SE is to be installed, you have the following checkmark:
Set Nuance PDF as your default viewer for Windows and Internet Explorer
This sets PDF Viewer SE as your system default PDF viewer. PDF files on the PaperPort
desktop are by default opened in a Nuance PDF product. If you select this option, PDF files
that are double-clicked anywhere on your system will open in PDF Viewer SE. To later modify
these settings on a Windows XP, you can go to Control Panel, Add/Remove programs and
select Change for Nuance PDF Viewer SE. On Windows Vista or above it is only possible by
launching the installer of Nuance PDF Viewer SE. If you do not have an existing PDF file type
association already configured in the system, the checkmark is selected by default.
2
Autorun launches the installers of the software components. PaperPort installer offers a Complete
or a Custom installation. Choose Custom only if you want to add your own folders to the supplied
PaperPort Desktop folders during installation.
Registering PaperPort 14 SE
At the end of installation, you will be asked to fill out an electronic form to register your copy of
PaperPort 14. If you decide not to, you will be prompted again seven days later. The registration
process will navigate you to http://register.nuance.com.
Uninstalling PaperPort 14 SE
For a full uninstallation, all PaperPort components should be removed one after the other. The
components are as follows:
· Nuance PDF Viewer SE
· PaperPort Image Printer (32-bit or 64-bit)
· Nuance PaperPort 14
Removing only the Image Printer and/or the PDF Viewer SE will cause PaperPort to function
incorrectly.
Uninstallation failure
Should the uninstallation of Nuance PaperPort 14 fail for any reason, you can clean up your
system from all references to this product by using the Remover.exe application. Find this tool
on the PaperPort product disk in the folder PaperPort\Utility. After running this executable,
reboot the machine and the component will be uninstalled.
Note
On a machine with restricted user rights, log into the machine with administrator rights
before running this utility.
Launch PaperPort
You should launch the main PaperPort application at least once after installation, before
attempting to use other PaperPort applications, such as ImageViewer.
Cloud connection
Nuance Cloud Connector
If installed, the Nuance Cloud Connector component (powered by Gladinet) is started on first
PaperPort launch. From this launch onwards, this component will automatically start after system
logon. This component can be installed and uninstalled later. Configuration of this component is
possible from Start menu and appears in the system tray as well. Nuance Cloud Connector
creates a dedicated drive in the operating system that will be automatically recognized by
3
PaperPort desktop application. The drive letter is N: by default or it can be configured to any
other drive letter in your configuration.
The CloudConnector can connect to a number of cloud provider services like Windows SkyDrive
and Google Docs. Each connection has to be set up and configured individually through the
Mount Virtual Directory wizard, which is available from the Nuance Cloud Connector
Management Console and if configured it can appear as a One-Click-Mount link at the root of the
mapped drive.
Nuance Cloud Connector synchronizes its local content with the cloud service providers when
active. The synchronization requires an Internet connection and the service provider to be
available at the time of synchronization.
Synchronization is initiated by creating, deleting or modifying files or folders locally or at the cloud
provider. Each cloud service provider connection appears as a separate folder under the local
Nuance Cloud Connector drive. Note that synchronization starts shortly after modifications and
cloud providers may change or convert the files once they are uploaded. PaperPort specific
hidden files are not synchronized.
Evernote Client
PaperPort Send To Link bar is extended with an Evernote link to be able to upload and download
attached documents. The Evernote connection can be configured through the Send To Link Bar.
Scanner Support
Install your scanner before you install PaperPort 14 SE
Your scanner must be working independently of the program prior to connecting it to PaperPort
14 SE. Scanners to be used by PaperPort 14 SE should be installed according to the scanner
manufacturer’s specifications. Please consult the documentation that came with your scanner for
information.
Scanner compatibility
Since scanners change frequently, refer to http://support.nuance.com/compatibility for the latest
information about PaperPort and scanner compatibility. If you are having issues with your
4
scanner, contact the scanner manufacturer for assistance. Most scanner manufacturers have web
sites that provide the latest scanner drivers, FAQs and other information about their products.
Known issues
Installation
PaperPort 14 does not support Citrix or Windows Terminal Services (WTS) environments and the
installation on Shared Network Drives.
Note
Do not set troubleshooting or compatibility mode for the Paprport.exe.
PDF Viewer
Internet Explorer 9 becomes unstable when closing it with a PDF file open by PDF Viewer’s
ActiveX plugin.
5
Emailing the current document from within PDF Viewer fails when the Whole Document option is
selected in the displayed E-mail dialog box.
Editing and saving certain files (DOC, XLS) will relocate the thumbnail on the PaperPort
Desktop
Some applications may create temporary files at saving time, resulting in the thumbnail being
moved by PaperPort to the end of the file listing.
Lotus Notes
Some Lotus Notes clients in a Windows 7 environment require configuration of Lotus program
folder security settings for the current user according to new operating system security
regulations.
PaperPort function affected:
· Drag and Drop files to Lotus Notes on the Send To bar
The MAX to PDF converter tool helps you to find and convert MAX files on your computer to the
PDF format. The converter is located in the Start menu next to the PaperPort application or can
be accessed among the program files; it is named cvmaxpdf.exe.
The file temporarily disappears from the Nuance Cloud Drive when dragged from a Windows
SkyDrive directory and dropped into the root Windows SkyDrive folder. After restart, the file
appears again.
An error message appears when trying to move a file between Google Docs folders mounted with
different accounts. In such cases, files may not always get moved and sometimes they copy over
to the destination directory and become corrupted.
