Challenges

This document discusses the challenges faced by irregular students at Cebu Technological University-Danao City Campus, particularly those who are Bachelor of Industrial Technology shiftees. Many students shift courses due to personal, social, or educational conflicts after their first or second year. Irregular students may feel a loss of confidence or be discouraged from failing classes and having to repeat them, impacting their academic record. However, there are many reasons why students become irregular besides academic failure. Some irregular students feel discriminated against compared to regular students in terms of scheduling. This research aims to provide understanding of the situations irregular students face and how transfer students deal with the challenges of their experience.

Challenges Encountered by Bachelor of Industrial Technology Irregular Students of Cebu Technological

University-Danao City Campus

Introduction

Graduating high school students often have a short period of time to think about what career path
they would like to have in the future. Some are pressured to follow the footsteps of their parents, some
are applying for the course because it sounds easy while some are applying for the course because of the
big profit that the future job can offer.

According to Vince Silva (2014), one of the major factors that have been affecting college students
to graduate earlier is the shifting of courses of the college student, especially after the first to second
year of experience of the student's studies. In this generation many Cebu Technological University-Danao
college students shift courses because of personal, social, and educational conflicts. According to the
statistics report by Streegan, et. al.(2011), people often think that there’s a possibility that a student
could lose self-confidence in studying and be discouraged to try again after failing and students who
failed to pass a certain requirement were obliged to repeat taking the particular subject which causes
poor remarks on the student’s academic records and even worse, having an impression of failing certain
subject even the student didn’t because not all irregular students became irregular because of failing.

On the other hand, Claudine Roque (2016), quoted that there’s a lot of reasons of being an irregular
student. It was emphasized that not all irregular students have poor or low average in academics
because being an irregular student comes with many reasons.Some people thinks that irregular students
take their studies for granted and think of it as non-important matter but people don’t really know the
reasons behind their situations.According to Bernadeth Bobiles(2004), study on the “Emotional
Intelligence in Relation to Academic Perofrmance of Selected Irregular Students of College of Arts
andSciences at New Era University in 2004, One of these factors is the feeling of discrimination. Many
irregular students are experiencing different treatment from the regular students like in the schedules
that the school provides.

Through this research, many students will be enlightened on the truth about the situations of irregular
students by including in this paper the stories of irregular students of Cebu Technological University-
Danao Campus particularly the BIT-shiftees and how these students deal with the challenges of being
transfer student experience and situation as irregulars.This research will give clear understanding and
awareness to those who know little of it.

In Cebu Technological University Danao City Campus, the transfer student population is rising. Some
irregular students sometimes feel discriminated from other students who are mostly regular.It is
commonly experienced these days that a good number of freshmen students shift from one course to
another every semester. It has always been a burden on the part of the student's immediate superior
who approved the shifting of courses. In fact, the incidence of indecision among college students has
become a burden to some faculty members in college level, since shifting is a product of irrational
decision which is notably interferes with the educational growth of the students.
