Position Paper - Violence Against Women

Violence against women is a manifestation of historically unequal power relations between men and women, and is a mechanism used to force women into a subordinate position compared to men. The document argues that eliminating violence against women and achieving gender equality are closely linked, as ending violence against women would move a country closer to gender equality, and having gender equality would mean fewer women being physically or emotionally hurt. While many countries have laws against violence towards women, cooperation from citizens is still needed to fully address the problem, as laws alone are not enough to ensure women's safety.

VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

Violence against women is, collectively, violent acts that are primarily or exclusively
committed against women. It is also known s gender-based violence. This can also be said as
a part of gender inequality because this type of violence targets a specific group with the
victim’s gender as a primary motive. This type of violence are committed against women
expressly because they are women. The UN Declaration of the Elimination of Violence
Against Women states that “violence against women is a manifestation of historically
unequal power relations between men and women.” It also stated that “violence against
women is one of the crucial social mechanisms by which women are forced into a
subordinate position compared with men.”

Many people, including the writer of this position paper, have been wanting to stop
and recommend measures to prevent and eliminate violence against women. Many people
have also been wanting to eliminate gender inequality and once it has been eliminated,
violence against women being stopped is highly possible. Inversely, if violence against
women was stopped, then the country will be one step closer to gender equality. And having
gender equality will mean having less women hurt, physically and emotionally. The
stereotypes that men and women have will disappear and gender will mean nothing regarding
to status.

Many countries have experienced violence against women resulting to different

women getting hurt. There have been many tries and many efforts done to fight this type of
violence. Many laws were also established in order to stop this violence. But this does not
secure the safety of women. In 2008, 5,768 violence-against-women cases were reported to
the police. This partly means that laws would not be able to stop this violence. Cooperation
from the citizens is needed. The citizens need to be willing to fight violence against women
for it to be stopped.

In conclusion, violence against women is something that not just one person or one
group can stop. For violence against women to be stopped, we all need to fight for it,
especially the women because they are the ones involved. They are the ones who gets hurt.
The pain of being hit is not the only one that hurts. Being degraded just because a person is a
woman brings more pain than being hit. And this is why violence against women should be
stopped.
