LDR

An LDR is a light-dependent resistor whose resistance decreases with increasing light intensity. It works as an automatic light-activated switch, having low resistance and allowing current flow in bright conditions but high resistance and obstructing current in the dark. The document describes the symbol and working principle of an LDR, noting its resistance is around 500 ohms in light and 200 kilohms in darkness when measured with a multimeter. LDRs are inexpensive at around 2000 rupiah each and are black in color. They can be used to control electric circuits based on light levels.

Light Dependent Resistor

1. What is a LDR?
LRD stands for Light Dependent Resistor which is one type of resistor
component whose resistance value can vary according to light intensity.

2. Light Dependent Resistor Symbol

3. Working Principle of LDR

a. Measure LDR on Bright Condition

1. Set the position of the Multimeter selector scale in the Ohm

position
2. Connect the Red Probe and Black Multimeter Probe on both legs
of the LDR
3. Give a bright light to the LDR
4.Read the resistance value on the Display Multimeter. LDR
Resistance Value on condition
the light will be around 500 Ohm

b. Measure LDR in Dark Condition

1. Set the position of the Multimeter selector scale in the Ohm

position
2. Connect the Red Probe and Black Multimeter Probe on both legs
of the LDR (no
there is polarity)
3. Close the LDR surface or make sure the LDR is not lit.
4.Read the resistance value on Multimeter Display. LDR Resistance
Value in dark conditions there will be about 200 KOhm.

4. LDR Function

The LDR function is as an automatic switch based on light. If

the light received by the LDR is large, the LDR resistance value will
decrease, and the power can flow (ON). Conversely, if the light
received by the LDR is small, then the LDR resistance value will
strengthen, and the electric current is obstructed (OFF). If a constant
“V’ is applied to the LDR, the intensity of the light increased and
current increases. The figure below shows the curve between
resistance Vs illumination curve for a particular light dependent
resistor.

5. LDR Price Around 2000 Rupiah

6. The Colour of LDR

LDR is Black
