An experiment was conducted to determine the empirical formula of magnesium oxide by burning magnesium metal in a crucible and comparing the masses of the reactants and products. The empirical formula was calculated to be MgO with a 1:1 ratio of magnesium to oxygen based on the experimental results. Precautions should be taken in experiments to avoid errors and ensure accurate empirical formulas are determined.

CONCLUSION
An experiment was performed to calculate the empirical formula of magnesium oxide
by comparing the masses of solid magnesium metal to the magnesium oxide solid product in a crucible. The empirical formula of a compound is the simplest whole number ratio between the elements of a compound. According to the theory, all the calculations that had written will show empirical formula for magnesium oxide which is MgO with the ratio 1:1. Based on the result, the mass of magnesium increase after burning when it reacts with oxygen and we need to lift the lid occasionally to allow of air to the magnesium ribbon. If there are any errors in the experiments the precautions should be taken to avoid this error in the future experiments.
