Table 1 of Road Note 27 PDF

Table 1 of road note 27 provides suggested minimum skid resistance values for different road site categories. Category A includes difficult sites like roundabouts, tight bends, and steep gradients, requiring a minimum skid resistance of 65. Category B includes motorways, trunk roads, and heavily trafficked urban roads carrying over 2000 vehicles daily, requiring a minimum of 55. Category C includes all other sites, requiring a minimum of 45. An additional texture depth of 0.65mm is required for high speed Category A and B sites over 95 km/h.

Table 1
Suggested Minimum Values of "skid - resistance"
(measured with the portable tester)
Minimum
Category Type of site "skid - resistance"
(surface wet)

A Difficult sites such as: 65

(i) Roundabouts
(ii) Bends with radius less than 150m on
unrestricted roads

(iii) Gradients, 1 in 20 or steeper, of

lengths greater than 1OOm

(iv) Approaches to traffic lights on

unrestricted roads

B Motorways, trunk and class 1 roads and 55

heavily trafficked roads in urban areas
(carrying more than 2000 vehicles per
day)

C All other sites 45

Note: For category A and B sites where speed of traffic is high (in excess of 95 km/h) an additional
requirement is a minimum "texture depth" of 0.65mm
