Assignment-1

 Draw the Schematic Diagram of a Thermal Power Plant.

 Draw a neat schematic diagram of a hydro-electric plant and explain the functions of various components
 Explain the essential factors, which influence the choice of site for a hydro-electric plant.
 Explain in brief, the different components of a Thermal Power Plant and their function.
 Derive an expression for the loop inductance of a single-phase line.
 Derive the expression for Sag when the Tower supports are at Different Levels.
 A transmission line has a span of 150 m between level supports. Line conductor has a cross- sectional area
of 1.25 cm2 and it weighs 1.0 kg/m. if the breaking stress of conductor is 4200 kg/cm2, calculate the
maximum sag for a safety factor of 4. Assume a maximum wind pressure of 100 kg/m2 of projected
surface.(also the vertical sag)
 Each conductor of a 3-phase overhead transmission line is suspended from a cross- arm of a steel tower by
a string of four suspension insulators. The voltage across the second unit is 15.0 kV and across the third
27.0 kV. Find the voltage between conductors and string efficiency.
 A string of 4 insulators has a self-capacitance equal to 10 times the pin to earth capacitance. Find (i) the
voltage distribution across various units expressed as a percentages of total voltage across the string and (ii)
string efficiency.
 What is Transposition?
 Transposition is the periodic swapping of positions of the conductors of a transmission line, in order to reduce
crosstalk and otherwise improve transmission. In telecommunications this applies to balanced pairs whilst
in power transmission lines three conductors are periodically transposed
 Find out the expression of Inductance of a transposed line.
 Two conductors of a single-phase line, each of 1 cm diameters, are arranged in a vertical plane with one
conductor mounted 1 m above the other. A second identical line is mounted at the same height as the first
and spaced horizontally 0.25 m apart from it. The two upper and the two lower conductors are connected in
parallel. Determine the inductance per km of the resulting double circuit line.
 Find the inductance of per phase per km of a double circuit line shown below. The conductors are
transposed and are of radius 0.75 cm each. The phase sequence is ABC
 Deduce an expression for voltage regulation of a short transmission line, giving the vector diagram.
 Electrically model a Medium Transmission Line (considering π model). Draw the Phasor diagram. Find out
Voltage Regulation and Transmission Efficiency. Also find out Generalized constants for the network.
 A 3-phase, 50 Hz, 150 km line has a resistance, inductive reactance and capacitive shunt admittance of 0.1
Ω, 0.5 Ω and 3X 10-6 S per km per phase. If the line delivers 50 MW at 110 KV and 0.8 p.f lagging,
determine the sending end voltage and current. Assume a nominal π circuit for the line.
 An 11 kV three phase transmission line has a resistance of 1.5 ohm and 4 ohm per phase. Calculate the
percentage regulation and efficiency of the line when a total load of 5000 kVA at 0.8 lagging power factor
is supplied at 11 kV at distant end.
 Corona Problem. find the disruptive critical voltage for the line.
 Derive an expression for the insulation resistance of a single-core cable.
 Write Short Note on (Any Three)
a) Pump storage plant or SPV plant.
b) Coal Fired Power Plant
c) Availability Based Tariff (ABT).
d) String efficiency
e) Indian Electricity Rule.
f) Medium Transmission line
g) A,B,C,D constants of Medium Transmission Line ( Nominal T Method)

i) GMD & GMR of Transmission line.
j) Ferranti effect
j) Two-part tariff
k) Power factor tariff
l) Three-part tariff
m) Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of Nuclear power plant.
