Uses of Electromagnets

Electromagnets are used in electric bells to repeatedly switch on and off, causing the bell hammer to move. They are also used in loudspeakers, where an electromagnet attached to a cone vibrates back and forth when placed in a permanent magnet's field, producing soundwaves. Additionally, electromagnets placed between the poles of a horseshoe magnet are used in electric motors, where reversing the magnetic field causes the electromagnet to turn due to attraction and repulsion.

USES OF ELECTROMAGNETS

1. In electric bells
An electromagnet have coils that is wound so that they have
opposite polarity. This causes the electromagnet to
repeatedly switch itself on and off when magnetized. The
bell hammer can be moved this way.

2. In loudspeakers
A mobile electromagnet (attached to a cone) is placed in
front of a permanent magnet in a loudspeaker and as pulses
of electricity pass through the coil of the electromagnet, the
direction of the magnetic field is rapidly changed.
So the electromagnet is attracted to and repelled from the
permanent magnet and vibrates back and forth. Thus it
produces soundwaves.

3. In electric motors
The magnetic field around an electromagnet can be
reversed by turning the battery around. By placing an
electromagnet in between the poles of a horseshoe magnet,
with like poles next to each other, repulsion and attraction
takes place and the electromagnet turns around. This
concept is used to make electric motors.
