“Winter Lullaby” Score Analysis

Ranges:
Soprano: Alto: Baritone:

Tessituras:
Soprano: Alto: Baritone:

Key: E-flat Major

Tempo:
Style: Ballad
Texture: 3 voices
Language: English

Teachable Moments:
1. Measure 15 where the first 2-part split occurs. I would use this moment to teach bout
singing in 3rds, and how the melody needs to remain the most important section, and
the harmony should accent the melodic phrase.
2. Measure 26 at rehearsal letter B. The “Oo”s in the alto and baritone parts are acting as
accompaniment, and should be very legato underneath the melody. Also a good
opportunity to teach good round vowels.
3. Measure 47 at rehearsal letter C. The music changes here, and so should the energy of
the piece. The sopranos and altos are in thirds again, and the baritone part has a sort of
echo of what the sopranos are singing.
4. Measure 61. There is a bit of chromaticism here, with the harmony outlining a IV7 chord
and moving to the end of the C section.

Stresses:

When the Winter snow meets the world below

Painting fields of white in the evening light

I will sing my song and it won’t be long

Til’ you’re sleeping through the night

In my arms you’ll be safe from the cold

And the warmth of my love will surround you

By your side I’ll stay till you drift away

(to my soft and sweet, now complete)

To my Winter lullaby

Though the winds may blow over hills of snow

And the frost may bite in the winter night

You will find your place in my warm embrace

And your dreams will soon take flight

Another season passes on its way

Another day has come and gone away

But always know my love is here to stay

Forever in my heart

Too soon for me the years go swiftly by

One day the time will come for you to fly

You’ll dream about your life and so will I

The world can wait and see

For now you’re here with me
