Influence Line Diagram

Influence line diagrams show how a particular response at a point on a structure, such as bending moment, shear force, or axial force, varies due to the position of a unit load moving along the structure. They are developed by considering the effect of a moving unit load on the structure and plotting the corresponding response at the point of interest. Influence line diagrams allow engineers to determine the maximum and minimum values of a particular response that can occur at any point along the structure.

Influence Line Diagrams

An influence line for a given function (such as a

reaction, axial force, shear force, or bending moment)
is a graph that shows the variation of that function at
any given point on a structure due to the application
of a unit load at any point on the structure.
