ELECTRICAL SERVICES

METHOD
OF
STATEMENT
(FOR SITE TESTING AND PRECOMMISIONING OF
TRANSFORMER)

Prepared by :

1
1. MEGGER TESTING

A. EQUIPMENT AND TOOLS FOR MEGGER TESTING:-

1.1 Megger Intruments shall be having calibration

1.2 Megger –with arrange 1000V shall be used for conducting the test.
1.3 Megger range 1000 V shall be used for wire testing.
1.4 Megger range 5000V shall be used for HT cable.

B. PRE – TEST PREPARATON FOR MEGGER TESTING:-

1.1. The lead for connecting megger testing with the circuit should be fault free and the
two connecting leads should have electrical continuity. It is checked by touching
the free end of the leads together while the megger button is pressed ON to check
for zero resistance.
1.2. Check for PVC adopters are provided for cables and male adapter for all PVC
conduits terminating in the panel board.
1.3. Check the dressing is complete for all the wires in the panel board.
1.4. Confirm all the connection are completed before megger before the testing.

C. ELECTRICAL CONTINUITY TEST FOR MEGGER TESTING

1.0 Connect the free megger the test probes to any conductors required be tested.
2.0 With all the appliance connected or the two ends of the conductors shorted and all
switches switched ON the reading shown on the megger should be zero. If the
reading shows infinity then there is an open circuit. The fault should be traced and
rectifier.
3.0 For cables, the extreme ends of any two phase is shorted and when the test is
conductor the reading should be zero if the meter read infinity or some value of
mega ohms then there is a fault in the cable and it should be rectified. Same
procedure shall be repeated for other 3 conductors of the cable:

2
2. SHORT CIRCUIT TEST:-

FOR WIRES;

1.1. For wires the circuit is tested, Megger range should be 1000V.
I. Between phase and neutral.
II. Between phase to earth
III. Between neutral to earth

With the other ends of the circuit conductor open the value should be infinity for all the test. If
the value is zero, there is short circuit or the insulation of the wire is damaged and the wire is
changed accordingly.

FOR CABLES;

1.2. For cable the Megger range should be 5000V, and both the ends of the cable shall be kept open
and test shall be conducted between phases and neutrals as follows:
I. Red to Yellow
II. Red to Blue
III. Yellow to Blue
IV. Red to Neutral
V. Yellow to Neutral
VI. Blue to Neutral

All these reading should be infinity, if otherwise the cable cores / phases are faulty and should
be rectified. The test results shall be recorded in a format for Engineers reference and record.
The format shall be submitted to Consultant for approval in advance prior to perform the
megger test operation.

3. INSULATION RESISTANCE TEST:-

INSULATION RESISTANCE TEST: (HT – EARTH)

I. Isolate the power supply to the transformer

II. Connect the HT live part of the terminal to the Earth by connecting with 5 KV
megger.
III. Check the value after one minute and record the steady value.

INSULATION RESISTANCE TEST: (LV – EARTH)

I. Connect the LV live part of the terminal to the Earth by connecting with 5 KV
megger.
II. Check the value after one minute and record the steady value.

INSULATION RESISTANCE TEST (HT – LV)

I. Connect the HT live part of the terminal to the LV part terminal by
connecting with 5 KV megger.
