Tutorial 2-2

This document contains 12 questions involving the analysis of mechanical components under stress and strain. The questions involve determining properties such as stiffness, yield strength, elongation, stress, strain, and displacements. Calculations are required to analyze diagrams of beams, rods, pipes, pads and other assemblies under various loading conditions. Material properties such as modulus of elasticity and yield strength are provided for steel, aluminum, copper, brass and other materials.

1. Refer to Fig. Q1. Data taken from a stress-strain test for a ceramic are given in the table. Plot
the diagram and determine the following: Stiffness, Yield strength, Ultimate strength,
modulus of resilience, % change in diameter and % change in length.

2. Refer to Fig. Q2 (a) and (b). The wires AB and BC have original lengths of 0.6 m and 0.9 m
and diameters of 3 mm and 5 mm, respectively. These wires have the shown stress-strain
diagram. Determine the elongation of the wires if the 6750 N load is placed on the platform.
[AB = 3.96 mm, [BC = 0.1116 mm ]

3. Refer to Fig. Q3. The strut is supported by a pin at C and an A-36 steel (SY = 250 MPa,
E=200 GPa) guy wire AB. If the wire has a diameter of 5 mm, determine how much it
stretches when the distributed load acts on the strut. [AB=2.429 mm]
4. Refer to Fig. Q4. When the two forces are placed on the beam, the diameter of the A-36 steel
(v=0.32, E = 200 GPa, SY = 250 MPa) rod BC decreases from 40 mm to 39.99 mm.
Determine the magnitude of each force P. [P=157 kN]

5. Refer to Fig. Q5. The friction pad A is used to support the member, which is subjected to an
axial force of P = 2 kN. The pad is made from a material having E = 4 MPa and v = 0.4. If
slipping does not occur, determine the normal and shear strains in the pad. The width is 50
mm. Assume the material is linear elastic. [ = 0.0866 mm/mm,  = 0.140 rad]

6. Refer to Fig. Q6. The A992 steel rod (E=200 GPa) is subjected to the loading shown. If the
cross-section area of the rod is 60 mm2 and neglecting the coupling at B, C and D, determine
a. the displacement of B and A. [ = 0.0866 mm/mm,  = 0.140 rad]
b. Stress at point D and E.
7. Refer to Fig. Q7. The assembly consists of two 10 mm diameter copper (E=101 GPa) rods
AB and CD and a 15 mm diameter steel EF (193 GPa) rod and a rigid bar G. If the horizontal
displacement at F is 0.45 mm, determine P. [P = 4.97 kN]
8. Refer to Fig. Q8. The rigid bar is supported by the pin-connected rod CB that has a cross-
sectional area 14 mm2 and is made of aluminium (E = 68.9 GPa). Determine the vertical
deflection of the bar at D when distributed load is applied. [r =17.3 mm ]

9. Refer to Fig. Q9. The steel pipe is filled with concrete and subjected to a compressive force of
80 kN. Determine the average stress in the concrete and the steel due to this loading. The
inner and outer diameters of the pipe are 70 mm and 80 mm respectively. Given Est = 200
GPa and Ec = 24 GPa. [st = 48.8 MPa. c = 5.85 MPa ]

10. Refer to Fig. Q10. Determine the support reactions at the rigid supports A and C. The
9 8
modulus of elasticity is E. [FC = 17 𝑃, FA= 17 𝑃 ]
11. Refer to Fig. Q11. If the gap between C and the rigid wall at D is initially 0.15 mm, determine
the support reactions at A and D when the force P = 200 kN is applied. The assembly is made
of A-36 steel (E = 200 GPa). [FD=20.4 kN, FA = 180 kN]

12. Refer to Fig. Q12. The assembly consists of a 6061–T6–aluminium (E=70 GPa) member and
a C83400-red-brass (E=102 GPa) member that rest on the rigid plates. Determine the distance
d where the vertical load P should be placed on the plates so that the plates remain horizontal
when the material deforms. Each member has a width of 200 mm and they are not bonded
together. [d=122.47 mm]
