THE THIRD COURSE IN THE BUSINESS AND TECHNOLOGY PATHWAY
COURSE SYLLABUS

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This block course addresses all areas of the approved Georgia Performance Standards for Business Communication. Communications
is necessary in the pursuit of academic, career, personal, and professional success. This course will aid students in their development of
communication skills. Students will participate in project-based learning activities that include producing several types of
correspondence; working as part of a team; enhancing career skills; discovering the various uses of presentation software; creating and
delivering dynamic presentations; editing and manipulating digital photographs; designing layouts, etc. This course is required for the
Business & Technology Pathway.

Business Communications is the third and final course in the Business and Technology pathway in the Business Management and
Administration cluster. Students enrolled in this course should have successfully completed Introduction to Business and Technology
and Business and Technology.

FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS OF AMERICA


FBLA is a co-curricular student organization that plays an integral part in the components of the Business & Technology course
standards. FBLA activities are incorporated throughout this course and the rest of the Business courses. Students are strongly urged
to join FBLA for $25 to benefit from the wealth of opportunities the organization has to offer.

STANDARDS/GOALS & OBJECTIVES:

Examine and practice grammar, mechanics, and process of composing professionally

Apply effective oral communication by communicating in a clear, courteous, concise, and

Integrate multiple forms of communication in the successful pursuit of a

Apply skills and strategies for the delivery of effective oral communication and
BMA-BC-7 presentations.
Use digital technologies (computers, PDAs, media players, GPS, etc.),
communication/networking tools, and social networks appropriately to access, manage,
integrate, evaluate, and create information to successfully function in professional
BMA-BC-8 settings.

Master presentation software to create, edit, publish, and deliver professional-appearing


BMA-BC-9 business presentations.

END OF PATHWAY ASSESSMENT


Students will be expected to earn their Word and PowerPoint Microsoft Office Certification. The PowerPoint Certification exam is the
End of Pathway test for all 3rd year Business Communications students. The test is proctored by an administrator in April. Students
will only have one opportunity to test for the End of Pathway Exam. Students that pass the End of Pathway Exam will earn a graduation
cord.

TUTORING SCHEUDLE
Tutoring is available by appointment if you have a matter that requires extensive time and discussion. Otherwise, please feel free to
stop by my room before or after school.

ABSENCES
It is very important that you are in class every day. If you are absent you are responsible for making up missing assignments. You must
make-up all work on your own time, not class time (unless you have completed the current day’s work). It is the student’s responsibility
to make arrangements to come before or after school to complete any missed work. Excused absences do not exempt you from any
missed assignments.

Be Professional, Be Ready, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible
• Be seated before the tardy bell rings-students standing in class after the tardy bell rings will be counted as tardy.
• Students are to remain in their assigned seats once the tardy bell has rung unless instructed by teacher.
• Be prepared with a pen (blue or black ink) or a pencil and paper each day, although we might not use each day.
• Any class work must be completed in blue or black ink or pencil. Papers completed in other colors will receive a zero and
cannot be re-copied.
• When absent you have 3 days to make up work. If you are absent for multiple days, you will have 1 additional day for each day
of absence to make up work. You cannot exempt an assignment due to being absent. ANY formative coursework submitted late
will results in an automatic grade of 70. Summative projects submitted late will lose 10 points for each day late.
• Uncooperative, argumentative, and disrespectful behavior will not be tolerated. Parents will be contacted, and a discipline
referral written.
• Sleeping and/or laying head on the desk will also result in a call to parents and a discipline referral.
• No food, drink (except water in designated areas), gum or candy is allowed in the classroom. Items are to be left outside or
thrown in the trash upon entry.
• Keep your hands, objects, and disrespectful comments to yourself—no horseplay or throwing things.
• Do not use cologne, perfume, fragranced lotion, makeup, combs, or brushes during class.
• No electronic devices should be seen or heard during class.
• No headphones should be used or seen. No hats or hoods are allowed during class.
• Do not make changes to computer hardware or software. The student will be charged the repair cost.
• Students are expected to participate in/complete ALL class activities.
• Stay in your assigned seat until I dismiss class. Push chairs under the table.
• Make sure your workstation is clean before you leave the classroom.
• Notify teacher if the computer is damaged or written on. (Vandalism to a computer costs money and time.)
• Do not exchange CPU, monitor, keyboard, or mouse without permission from teacher.
• Do not change the computer background.
• The Internet is to be used for our classroom assignments and projects; you need permission to print for other classes.
• No GAMING, SOCIAL MEDIA, or any other nonacademic related internet browsing without permission.
• Do not save work using inappropriate language, draw inappropriate pictures, or discuss inappropriate topics in class.
• Follow ALL school policies in handbook.
