Complex Engineering Problem

The document is a mechanical engineering assignment that provides four complex engineering problems for students to solve. It asks students to: 1) Explain failure of a garden hose and the location and direction of a tear using pressure values. 2) Explain why steel bands around a wood-slat silo are not evenly spaced, and how to calculate spacing for equal band stress. 3) Compare stresses in rods with turnbuckles attached along or across the rods' axes using load and diameter values. 4) Explain how to obtain and sketch the stress distribution over a chimney section due to wind deformation, using creeping strain analysis. Students must submit solutions in a technical report format by December 13

PAKISTAN INSTITUTE OF ENGINEERING & APPLIED SCIENCES

DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

SEMESTER III (Batch 2018-2022)

Mechanics of Materials – II
Text Book: Mechanics of Materials, R C Hibbler, 9th edition.
Complex Engineering Problem (CEP) (Marks: 05) [CLO-4]

Roll No. 1 to 12
Explain why failure of this garden hose occurred
near its end and why the tear occurred along its
length. Use numerical values to explain your
result. Assume the water pressure is 30 psi.

Roll No. 13 to 24

This open-ended silo contains granular material. It

is constructed from wood slats and held together with steel
bands. Explain, using numerical values, why the bands are
not spaced evenly along the height of the cylinder. Also,
how would you find this spacing if each band is to be
subjected to the same stress?

Roll No. 25 to 36
Unlike the turnbuckle at B, which is
connected along the axis of the rod, the one at
A has been welded to the edges
of the rod, and so it will be subjected to
additional stress. Use the same numerical
values for the tensile load in each rod and
the rod’s diameter, and compare the stress in
each rod

Roll No. 37 to Onwards

A constant wind blowing against the side of this
chimney has caused creeping strains in the mortar joints,
such that the chimney has a noticeable deformation.
Explain how to obtain the stress distribution over a section
at the base of the chimney, and sketch this distribution
over the section

Guidelines:
Submit the given CEP in technical report form.
Results, discussion and references should be
clearly mentioned.

Submission Date: 13th Dec , 2019 (Friday)
