ADDition of Polynomial
ADDition of Polynomial
I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standards The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of algebraic
expressions, the properties of real numbers as applied in linear equations, and
inequalities in one variable.
B. Performance Standards The learner is able to model situations using oral, written, graphical, and
algebraic methods in solving problems involving algebraic expressions, linear
equations, and inequalities in one variable.
C. Learning Competencies/ The learner adds and subtracts polynomials.
Objectives:
Write the LC code for each
IV. PROCEDURES
INTRODUCTION Tell whether the given expression is a polynomial or not. If it is a
polynomial, determine its degree and tell its kind according to the
number of terms. If it is NOT, explain.
1
1. 8𝑥 2 4. 6𝑥 ⁄2 − 𝑥 2 + 𝑥 + 7
5
2. 32 − 5𝑥𝑦 5. 2
6𝑥
3. x
ACTIVITY Activity 1
Familiarize yourself with the tiles below.
Can you represent the following quantities using the above tiles?
1. x + 2
2. 4x +1
Activity 2.
Use the tiles to find the sum of the following polynomials;
1. 5x + 3x
2. (2𝑥 2 – 5x + 2) + (3𝑥 2 + 2x)
ANALYSIS Rules for Adding Polynomials
To add polynomials, simply combine similar terms. To combine similar
terms, get the sum of the numerical coefficients and annex the same
literal coefficients. If there is more than one term, for convenience,
write similar terms in the same column.
Example:
Perform the operation.
1) Add 4a – 3b + 2c, 5a + 8b – 10c and -12a + c.
4a -3b +2c
5a+ 8b -10c
+ -12a +c
--------------------
-3a +5b -7c
APPLICATION The width of a rectangular garden is 2x-7 feet and the length is 3x+8
feet. Write a polynomial that represents the perimeter and then
evaluate this perimeter polynomial if x is 5 feet.
ASSESSMENT Answer the following questions. Show your solution.
1) What is the sum of 3𝑥 2 – 11x + 12 and 18𝑥 2 + 20x – 100?
2) (3x-4)+ (7x+8)
3) (-6x-3) + (3x-9)
4) (3xᵌ+5x-9) + (-3x+4)
