WATER DEMAND CALCULATION OF 12000 BSPD HYDRO SKIMMING
MODULAR REFINERY PROJECT
1. AIM
The aim of this document is to clarify the Water Demand Calculation for Fire protection system in
12000 BSD HYDRO Skimming Modular Refinery Project.
2. GENERAL INFORMATION
Nigeria’s Petroleum Industry is considered to be the largest in Africa and the country is regarded as a
prominent exporter of Crude Oil. Although Nigeria being a major source of Crude Oil, the country
lacks sufficient refining capacity to support the energy demands of the growing indigenous
population. Oil demand has been increasing substantially over time and as of 2014 the total demand
in Nigeria stood at 396,000 bpd of which the demand for gasoline alone was 284,000 bpd and 50,000
bpd for distillates. This demand in addition to the low throughput of the existing refineries and an
increasing population have forced Nigeria to become a major importer of petroleum products in
Africa. In 2014 Nigeria imported 156,000 bpd of petroleum products, which was still far from meeting
the local demand.
Azikel Petroleum Limited plans to develop a 12,000 BPSD Refinery in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, Nigeria.
This new Refinery would be a significant step towards providing locally produced petroleum products
in addition to making a significant contribution to the economic and human development in the
region in a very sustainable manner.
3. CODES AND STANDARD
NFPA 11 ‐ Standard for Low, Medium, and High‐Expansion Foam
NFPA 13 ‐ Standard for installation of Sprinkler System
NFPA 15 ‐ Standard for Water spray Fixed system
NFPA 16 ‐ Standard for the Installation of Foam‐Water Sprinkler Systems
NFPA 30 ‐ Flammable and combustible Liquids Code
IP 19 ‐ Fire Precaution at Petroleum refineries and bulk storage installations
In addition to above, the Water Demand Calculation is in line with the technical requirement
identified in the technical specifications reference: 1910502‐ENG‐FF‐001.

4. CALULATION OF WATER REQUIREMENT:
4.1 CASE ‐1 (STORAGE TANK)
While referring to the Overall Plot Plan layout drawing ‐ 1079‐2000‐L01‐501‐001, Largest Tank is TK –
2103.
1 Design Standard NFPA‐30, NFPA‐11 & IP CODE – PART 19
2 Tank (TK‐2103) considered under fire Ø 32m x 20m (HT) – 1 No.
3 Type of fire protection proposed Foam system for liquid surface area
4 Design Density 4.1 Lpm / sq.m
5 Foam Concentrate Induction Rate 3%
6 Foam Solution Discharge Duration Required 30 Minutes
Total discharge of foam solution for liquid
7 803.84 x 4.1 Lpm = 3295.74 Lpm
surface area of tank (π x r²) ………. (A)
8 Water Demand for Adjacent Tank (TK‐2102 & Same as TK‐2103 For Future)
9 Size of the Tank
TK‐2102 Ø 20.2m x 20m (HT) – 1 No.
Same as TK‐2103 for Future Ø 32m x 20m (HT) – 1 No.
Design Density of Water Application Required
10 2 Lpm / sq.m
for the Adjacent Tanks
11 Water Demand for the Adjacent Tanks
TK‐2102
(Shell Area x 0.50) + (Roof Area) (1268.56 x 0.50) + 324.75 = 959.03 sq.m
959.03 sq.m x 2 Lpm = 1918.06 Lpm
Same as TK‐2103
(Shell Area x 0.50) + (Roof Area) (2009.60 x 0.50) + 826.45 = 1831.25 sq.m
1831.25 sq.m x 2 Lpm = 3662.5 Lpm
Total Water Demand for Adjacent Tanks…...(B) 1918.06 + 3662.5 = 5580.56 Lpm
12 Hose Stream Demand…...(C) 3785 Lpm
13 Water Demand for all Systems (A) + (B) + (C) = 12661.30 Lpm
Add 10% Hydraulic Imbalance 12661.30 x 1.10 = 13927.43 Lpm
14 Total Fire Water Demand Required for Case‐1 13927.43 Lpm

4.2 CASE ‐2 (DYKE PROTECTION)
While referring to the Overall Plot Plan layout drawing ‐ 1079‐2000‐L01‐501‐001, Largest Dyke is Tk –
2103.
1 Design Standard NFPA‐11
2 Dyke (TK‐2103) considered under fire 1635 sq.m
3 Type of fire protection proposed Foam system for liquid surface area
4 Design Density 6.5 Lpm / sq.m
5 Foam Concentrate Induction Rate 3%
6 Foam Solution Discharge Duration Required 30 Minutes
Total discharge of foam solution for liquid
7 1635 x 6.5 Lpm = 10627.5 Lpm
surface area of Dyke
Add 10% Hydraulic Imbalance 10627.5 x 1.10 = 11690.25 Lpm
8 Total Fire Water Demand Required for Case‐2 11690.25 Lpm
4.3 CASE ‐3 (WAREHOUSE PROTECTION)
1 Design Standard NFPA‐13
2 Warehouse considered under fire 36.30m x 13.30m = 482.79 sq.m
3 Type of fire protection proposed Sprinkler System
4 Design Density 10.2 Lpm / sq.m
5 Area of Sprinkler Operation 354 sq.m
6 Water Demand for Sprinkler System…….(A) 3610.8 Lpm
7 Hose Stream Demand…...(B) 3785 Lpm
8 Water Demand for all Systems (A) + (B) = 7395.8 Lpm
